PST: Yallop named MLS Coach of the Year

A compelling case could be made for Ben Olsen as coach of the year. I certainly tried during our ProSoccerTalk awards conversations.

But my PST colleague Richard Farley beat me into submission, making a case for San Jose Earthquakes boss Frank Yallop as convincing as any of those Law & Order types on TV ever could.

I guess he was right ? at least in most voters? minds.

Yallop did, indeed, win MLS Coach of the Year today as MLS post-season awards continue to roll out.

Farley pointed out, among other things, that Yallop?s setup helped squeeze career years out of several players. He also told us ?

At the beginning of the season, few were picking San Jose to make the playoffs. The West was tough, and their talent just didn?t look up to snuff. Early on, though, it was apparent that he had fused the parts together to create a greater sum. In a year in which they were supposed to be gone by November, San Jose cruised to the Supporters? Shield.?

?You could say all the stars aligned for him, but that?s a lot of stars and a very straight line. It?s far more plausible that Yallop?s done an incredible job.?

Galapagos tortoises are a migrating species

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? The Galapagos giant tortoise, one of the most fascinating species of the Galapagos archipelago, treks slowly and untiringly across the volcanic slopes. Scientists of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Radolfzell, together with the Charles Darwin Foundation, have used GPS technology and modern 3D acceleration measurements to find out that especially the dominant male tortoise wanders up to 10 kilometres into the highlands of the island. Only the fully grown animals migrate, the young tortoises stay year round in the lowlands. The reason for this and the question of why the animals don't rest during the dry season are not known yet.

The large, dominant male Galapagos giant tortoises usually start their annual migration at the beginning of the dry season.

Even Charles Darwin anticipated that the giant tortoises wandered large distances. In the cool dry season, the highlands of Santa Cruz are engulfed in fog which allows the vegetation to grow despite the lack of rain. In the lowlands, however, there is no thick layer of clouds and the tortoises' vegetation is not available year round. Adults, which can weigh up to 250 kilogram, spend the dry season in the higher regions at an elevation of 400 meters above sea level. However, since the food is not as nutritious there, they trek back to the lower zones where there is succulent vegetation in abundance as soon as the rainy season begins.

In order to study the migratory pattern more closely, Stephen Blake from the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology and his colleague Washington Tapia from the Galapagos National Park secured GPS loggers with 3D acceleration monitors onto 17 adult tortoises. This allowed the scientists to determine the animals' exact position and behaviour over a period of two years. In order to gather information on the entire population, the researchers noted the size, sex and location of each tortoise they met on their monthly hikes along the volcanic hillsides. They combined the GPS data with the temperature data and information about availability of vegetation.

The results show that the tortoises have a partial migration system, where not every individual migrates. Only the adult animals wander and only the larger specimens are more likely to move. In June they start their slow, tedious march which can be up to ten kilometres long into the highlands. Adult females remain in the lowlands until they lay their eggs and then they also make their way to the highlands. In contrast, the smaller tortoises stay in the lower elevated areas all year round.

Although giant tortoises are able to survive for up to one year without nourishment, which made them a popular staple for seamen, they nevertheless wander for large distances searching for food as this study shows for the first time. Why don't they just look for a shelter? The question of why the younger animals don't migrate hasn't been answered by the scientists yet. "Either the energy expenditure of this strenuous hike is too high, or there is still enough food available for the smaller animals." Stephen Blake suspects, "perhaps the younger animals can't tolerate the wet cold climate of the higher regions."

In other species, the largest and the most dominant individual does not migrate because it can best defend itself against its competitors. It doesn't have to leave to survive. However, among the Galapagos tortoises, it's usually the largest and most dominant individual which takes on this arduous journey.

Future studies on giant tortoise species of the other Galapagos Islands with varying ecological conditions will show how environment influences the migration scheme of these closely related reptiles. The scientists also want to include factors such as age, size, sex and morphology in their studies to see why the behaviour changes in different lifetime stages and what the trigger of migration is.

Despite the threat of hunting, invasive species such as goats and rats, and the loss of habitat due to man, the Galapagos Tortoise still shows its original migrating behaviour. This and future studies will help to maintain this behaviour with the help of effective measures such as establishing corridors, preserving key habitats, keeping tortoise-friendly roads and maintaining less urban development. Based on its importance to the Galapagos Archipelago ecosystem as an herbivore and seed disperser, the annual migration of the tortoise must be preserved.

President signs whistle-blower bill for US workers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama signed legislation Tuesday that affords greater protection to federal employees who expose fraud, waste and abuse in government operations.

Capping a 13-year effort by supporters of whistle-blower rights, the new law closes loopholes created by court rulings, which removed protections for federal whistle-blowers. One loophole specified that whistle-blowers were only protected when they were the first to report misconduct.

Obama also signed legislation that protects U.S. airlines from having to pay into a European Union program to cut down on pollutants. Earlier this month, the EU postponed its enforcement of the payment for non-EU airlines amid protests from numerous countries and threats of a possible trade war.

The whistle-blower law makes it easier to punish supervisors who try to retaliate against the government workers.

The federal official who investigates retaliation, Special Counsel Carolyn Lerner, said her office "stands ready to implement these important reforms, which will better ensure that no employee suffers retaliation for speaking out against government waste or misconduct."

The new legislation, however, would go beyond restoring protections, to expand whistle-blower rights and clarify certain protections. For example, whistle-blowers could challenge the consequences of government policy decisions.

Specific protections would be given to certain employees, including government scientists who challenge censorship. Workers at the Transportation Security Administration, who provide airport security, would be covered under the law for the first time.

The law also would clarify that whistleblowers have the right to communicate with Congress.

To stop illegal retaliation, the law would make it easier to discipline those responsible, by modifying the burden of proof required when taking action against those trying to punish whistle-blowers. Also, the Office of Special Counsel, which was established to protect federal employees, would no longer be liable for attorney fees of government managers if the office does not prevail in a disciplinary action.

The new law would suspend the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals' sole jurisdiction to review decisions in whistle-blower cases.

The law's supporters said the court consistently narrowed protections and ruled for whistle-blowers only three times in 229 cases between October 1994 and May 2012. A review by all federal circuit courts was added as a two-year experiment.

Tom Devine, legal director of the Government Accountability Project, said, "This reform took 13 years to pass because it can make so much difference against fraud, waste and abuse. Government managers at all levels made pleas and repeatedly blocked the bill through procedural sabotage."

Devine, whose organization represents whistle-blowers, said the bill sailed through Congress once some senators who previously worked in secret to block a vote dropped their opposition.

The new airlines law was a response to an EU program that places a cap on carbon dioxide emissions from industrial polluters. Early this year, the law was expanded to include all airlines flying into and out of Europe.

U.S. airlines complained that they would be charged even for the emissions discharged over the United States or the Atlantic on their way to European destinations. The U.S. industry says it would cost it some $3.1 billion between 2012 and 2020. Those payments were to start in April, but the EU postponed that earlier this month.

"Although European leaders have temporarily pulled back their tax proposal, the law signed by the president today will help ensure the EU scheme will not resurface next year like a phoenix rising from the ashes," said Rep. John Mica of Florida, the Republican chairman of the House Transportation Committee,

The airlines emissions legislation requires the transportation secretary to prohibit U.S. airlines from paying into the EU emissions program if that prohibition is deemed in the public interest. It also urges the administration to engage in international talks to seek a global approach to aircraft emissions.

"The Obama administration should seek binding regulations and limits on such pollution when it meets with international partners to establish these rules at the International Civil Aviation Organization," said Sarah Saylor of the environmental group Earthjustice.

Obama also signed legislation that permits construction of a natural gas pipeline within certain areas of the Gateway National Recreation Area in New York City.

He also signed into law legislation that sets a cost-of-living adjustment for veterans who receive disability compensation. The increase is estimated to amount to about 1.9 percent.

Asia stocks fall as talks over US budget stall

BANGKOK (AP) ? Lack of progress in negotiations for a deal to avoid a U.S. budget crisis before a January deadline sent Asian stock markets lower on Wednesday.

President Barack Obama and U.S. lawmakers have until Jan. 1 to reach a deal to trim the country's unwieldy deficit. Otherwise, a series of automatic tax increases and sharp spending cuts will take effect that could drag the world's No. 1 economy into recession.

A high-ranking member of the U.S. Senate unnerved investors and sent Wall Street lower on Tuesday after expressing frustration over the budget impasse and the looming "fiscal cliff."

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.8 percent to 9,348.55, a day after closing at a seven-month high. South Korea's Kospi shed 0.8 percent to 1,909.56 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.5 percent to 4,434.90. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.8 percent to 21,672.98.

Obama plans to make a public case this week for his strategy for dealing with the issue as he pressures opposing lawmakers to allow tax increases on the wealthy while extending tax cuts for families earning $250,000 or less.

On Wall Street, reports released Tuesday showing increases in U.S. consumer confidence and orders for machinery and equipment failed to boost stocks significantly.

"If one could just take politicians and the fiscal cliff out of the picture, an optimistic outlook would be far easier to cobble together. There's been depressingly little news of cliff breakthroughs, or even developments, of late," said analysts at DBS Bank Ltd. in Singapore in an email commentary.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.7 percent to close at 12,878.13. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.5 percent to close at 1,398.94. The Nasdaq composite fell 0.3 percent to 2,967.79.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was down 8 cents to $87.10 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 56 cents to finish at $87.18 per barrel on the Nymex on Tuesday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2936 from $1.2939 on Tuesday in New York. The dollar fell to 81.90 yen from 82.17 yen.

Paper books, physical language schools still most popular for English learning

Did you take English lessons before overseas travel? graph of japanese statisticsgoo Research recently conducted a survey into overseas travel and language learning, the highlights of which japan.internet.com published.

Demographics

Between the 7th and 9th of November 2012 1,094 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.2% of the sample were male, 16.3% in their teens, 18.3% in their twenties, 21.5% in their thirties, 16.4% in their forties, 15.6% in their fifties, and 12.0% aged sixty or older.

I too much specify a preference for real books and real language schools, which leads me to think that perhaps there is an age bias in this survey. The figures were not reported, but older people tend to travel overseas more (I think?), thus older people would tend to be more wedded to 20th century technology, thus the bias away from virtual learning?

Since I?m mentioning online learning, I?ll put in a good word for Tofugu; he offers online Japanese courses along with his rather entertaining blog.

Research results

Q1: Have you been abroad within the last five years? (Sample size=1,094)

Q1SQ1: Did you take English lessons in preparation for this travel? (Sample size=377)

Yes (to SQ2) 17.2%
Didn?t travel to English-speaking country 18.6%
No 64.2%

Combining these two we get:

Yes 5.9%
Didn?t travel to English-speaking country 6.4%
No 22.1%

New Congress: Fewer moderates make deals harder

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When the next Congress cranks up in January, there will be more women, many new faces and 11 fewer tea party-backed House Republicans from the class of 2010 who sought a second term.

Overriding those changes, though, is a thinning of pragmatic, centrist veterans in both parties. Among those leaving are some of the Senate's most pragmatic lawmakers, nearly half the House's centrist Blue Dog Democrats and several moderate House Republicans.

That could leave the parties more polarized even as President Barack Obama and congressional leaders talk up the cooperation needed to tackle complex, vexing problems such as curbing deficits, revamping tax laws and culling savings from Medicare and other costly, popular programs.

"This movement away from the center, at a time when issues have to be resolved from the middle, makes it much more difficult to find solutions to major problems," said William Hoagland, senior vice president of the Bipartisan Policy Center, a private group advocating compromise.

In the Senate, moderate Scott Brown, R-Mass., lost to Democrat Elizabeth Warren, who will be one of the most liberal members. Another GOP moderate, Richard Lugar of Indiana, fell in the primary election. Two others, Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas and Olympia Snowe of Maine, are retiring.

Moderate Democratic senators such as Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Jim Webb of Virginia are leaving, as is Democratic-leaning independent Joe Lieberman.

While about half the incoming 12 Senate freshmen of both parties are moderates, new arrivals include tea party Republican Ted Cruz of Texas, conservative Deb Fischer of Nebraska, and liberals such as Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin and Hawaii's Mazie Hirono.

There's a similar pattern in the House, where 10 of the 24 Democratic Blue Dogs lost, are retiring or, in the case of Rep. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., are moving to the Senate. That will further slash a centrist group that just a few years ago had more than 50 members, though some new freshmen might join.

Among Republicans, moderates like Reps. Judy Biggert of Illinois and New Hampshire's Charles Bass were defeated while others such as Reps. Jerry Lewis of California and Steven LaTourette of Ohio decided to retire.

"Congress seems to be going in the opposite direction of the country, just as the country is screaming for solutions to gridlock," said Democratic strategist Phil Singer.

Whether the changes are good is often in the eye of the beholder.

Seventy-one of the 83 House GOP freshmen of 2010 were re-elected Nov. 6, but 11 lost, including one of the group's highest profile members, conservative Rep. Allen West, R-Fla. Another faces a runoff in December.

"Some of the people who are the anti-government ideologues, some of them are gone," said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "And that message has been rejected by the American people."

Sal Russo, strategist for the Tea Party Express, said such departures would be balanced by newly elected conservatives, including the Senate's Cruz and GOP Reps.-elect Ted Yoho of Florida and Mark Meadows of North Carolina.

"Pretty much everybody that ran in 2012 was talking about the economic woes we face, stopping excessive spending, controlling unsustainable debt," he said.

Overall, the new House is on track for a 234-201 Republican majority, a narrowing of their 242-193 advantage today, which includes five vacancies. Democrats will control the Senate 55-45, up from 53-47.

A dozen of the 100 senators and at least 81 of the 435 House members, almost one-fifth, will be in their first term, slightly above historic averages. The Associated Press hasn't declared winners in two House races.

Many newcomers, in Washington for orientation sessions after their election, described a need to compromise. Some also made it clear there will be plenty of fuel for partisan clashes.

"I'm going in open-minded," said conservative Rep.-elect Roger Williams, R-Texas. "But I have certain core values like we all do and I'm not going to waver on that."

All together, there will be 73 women in the House and 20 in the Senate. Both are records.

For the first time, more than half of House Democrats ? 105, in this case ? will not be white males.

One white male will be Rep.-elect Joseph Kennedy III, a Massachusetts Democrat whose father was Rep. Joe Kennedy, D-Mass., and grandfather was New York Sen. and Democratic presidential candidate Robert Kennedy. When the newest Kennedy takes office, it will end the only two years since 1947 without a member of his family in Congress.

Those leaving include several who have been in the middle of recent years' policy battles.

Among them are Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., the GOP's No. 2 Senate leader; Indiana's Lugar, a longtime GOP power on foreign policy; North Dakota's Conrad, the Senate Budget Committee chairman and one of his party's chief deficit foes; and Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., who heads the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

Gone from the House will be California Democratic Reps. Pete Stark, a major force on health issues, and Howard Berman, long influential in foreign affairs, plus liberal Massachusetts stalwart Barney Frank, whose name is on the new law overhauling the government's regulation of banks and other financial institutions.

Also leaving: House Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier, R-Calif., and Ron Paul, 77, who charted his own libertarian course in Congress and long-shot campaigns for the GOP presidential nomination in 2008 and 2012.

"The status quo will continue," Paul, who sees little difference between the two political parties, said of the new Congress. As for his own departure, he said, "Nobody will notice."

yadav.singh: Hand and Wrist Pain | - Health and Fitness Media ...

I am often surprised that folks don?t contemplate chiropractic look after hand and wrist pain. We do extra than simply low again and neck pain. We are taught to deal with the spine and most different joints of the physique together with the hand and wrist.

Hand and wrist ache for the sake of this article isn?t about carpal tunnel syndrome. That?s one other topic for an additional day. In addition to which, most carpal tunnel syndromes contain the neck. Hand and wrist pain will be independent of the neck.

What are the a number of the extra common hand and wrist pain cases that a typical chiropractor would treatall For one, overuse or repetitive pressure syndromes that may manifest either as hand/wrist or elbow pain. The typical situations could be sports accidents, falling and catching oneself with the hand prolonged, weight lifting or lifting heavy items (resembling with a recent move to another home). Even repetitive actions such as knitting, crocheting, laptop usage can add to repetitive strain. Massage therapists also are in danger for repetitive strains with the heavy utilization of their arms, forearms and elbows.

Ache alongside the thumb (normally of the dominant hand) is another typical pain syndrome seen by chiropractors. This is often an inflammation of the extensor hallicus longus tendon ? translation: irritation of the tendon that goes to the thumb. This is normally of a power nature. Problem writing, choosing up objects, performing advantageous motor abilities with the thumb may be painful. The joint the place the thumb attaches to the hand is the most commonly degenerative joint within the hand. That tells us we use our thumbs a lot. Over time the damage and tear stress upon that joint makes is vulnerable to degenerative or arthritic changes.

Finger ache reveals up now and then. Usually, the finger does not bend all the way. The ache is normally not disabling however annoying. I had a affected person with such a case. He had low grade finger ache for over 20 years. He thought there was no cure. Simply on a whim he ventured to ask if anything could possibly be finished for it. One treatment and the ache was completely gone and hasn?t returned since.

A typical therapy protocol for hand and wrist ache is in fact chiropractic adjustments. I take advantage of the Activator (hand held gadget) which pinpoints the joint accurately. I also use the ?speeder board? which is like a mini-drop table. This helps to jog loose the joint that perhaps stuck. Mushy tissue work can also be helpful to scale back irritation, break up adhesions, reduce muscle spasm, enhance vascularity to the tissues and most significantly scale back pain. Checking other associated buildings can ferret out contributing causes to the pain. Sometimes, the elbow, shoulder and neck are the same old suspects.

In additional advanced circumstances, testing for lack of power and different orthopedic tests to rule out nerve entrapment syndromes, carpal tunnel syndrome, and thoracic outlet syndrome may be necessary.

The point of this text is to speak up to your chiropractor about any hand or wrist pain that you may be having. You may be surprised.

(AP) ? The hum of massive mobile generators, boilers and pumps emerges blocks from Manhattan's Financial District and turns into a steady din south of Wall Street ? the now-familiar sound of an area laboring to recover from Superstorm Sandy.

Other parts of the city have gotten mayoral visits and media attention after the Oct. 29 storm killed dozens of residents and tore apart homes in coastal neighborhoods. Less obvious were the millions upon million gallons of sea water that wreaked havoc on subterranean electrical panels and other internal infrastructure throughout lower Manhattan, making them unusable even after power was restored to the area.

"There were waves on Wall Street, and it all ended up here," Mike Lahm, a building engineer who rode out the storm at 120 Wall Street, said during a recent tour of the skyscraper's basement.

Nearly a month later, some of the high-rises that are home to investment banks, large law firms and luxury apartments have bounced back quickly. But others buildings remain eerily dark and vacant.

Landlords have warned full power won't be back for weeks, if not months, leaving businesses and residents displaced and uncertain about when ? and even whether ? they'll return. JP Morgan Chase, the Daily News and the American Civil Liberties Union are among tenants still operating in satellite locations after getting washed out of their headquarters in lower Manhattan.

Heavy flooding also hit a complex of multimillion-dollar apartments along the Hudson River, whose well-heeled owners ? reportedly including Gwyneth Paltrow and Meryl Streep ? could quietly retreat to second or third homes on higher and drier ground.

"What you're looking at here is a mass exodus," downtown resident Gail Strum said as she retrieved some files and other belongings from a rental apartment building that's still without power. "It feels like there's no coming back."

On paper, Strum's assessment sounds too pessimistic. The city Buildings Department declared only nine buildings in lower Manhattan unsafe because of structural damage from the storm, and the power company, Consolidated Edison, says all buildings citywide had access to electricity and steam power by Nov. 15.

A real estate consulting firm that's tracking the lower Manhattan recovery, Jones Lang LaSalle, says 49 of the 183 office buildings in the business district were closed because of mechanical failures. By the latest count, at least half were back in full operation, even if it has meant relying on temporary power. More are expected to follow.

"We see that as a very healthy pace," said John Wheeler, a Jones Lang LaSalle executive.

One success story was 120 Wall Street, a 600,000-square-foot, 34-story skyscraper built near the East River that's home to nonprofits such as the National Urban League, the United Negro College Fund and the Eye-Bank for Sight Restoration.

Even before Sandy hit, landlord Silverstein Properties got ahead of a scramble for recovery resources by securing portable diesel generators each capable of providing 2 megawatts of power. Afterward, the building brought in its own fuel tanker from Pennsylvania ? and a security team from Florida to guard it ? so it could keep the generators going during the gas crunch.

Using a mix of generator power and restored Con Ed service, engineers had the elevators, lights and heat up and running by mid-November.

To the tenants, "It's as if the building's operating normally," said Jeremy Moss, a vice president with Silverstein Properties.

What tenants don't see in the bowels of 120 Wall Street is a thicket of temporary, exposed wiring that runs everywhere. The warning "LIVE WIRE. KEEP OUT" is spray-painted in red on the door of a room housing switches, fuses or circuit breakers after it was submerged. The air is clammy and musty ? "the smell of the East River," said Lahm, the building engineer.

Fearing the East River might one day try again to meet the Hudson, 120 Wall Street and other buildings are facing an even bigger, more expensive job: Moving critical infrastructure to higher floors or even roofs.

"We're going to need to relocate equipment so history doesn't repeat itself," Moss said.

Farther uptown, NYU Langone Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital Center had put generators on high floors where they could be protected in a flood. But they still suffered failures with Sandy, apparently because other critical components of the backup power system, such as fuel pumps and tanks, remained in basements just a block from the East River.

While 120 Wall Street enjoys a degree of normalcy, other newer and taller glass towers around it remain shut as teams of contractors and workers struggle to restore power, phone and other services. Tractor-trailers providing emergency services such as "microbial remediation" crowd the streets. Cabs are few.

Fire engines became a part of the mix on Friday with the report of a fire in the basement of another vacated office building at 55 Water St. ? the address for financial services company Standard & Poor's and the city Department of Transportation ? that left two dozen people suffering from smoke inhalation and sent four to a hospital. The cause wasn't immediately clear.

The lower Manhattan disarray has also reached the courtroom. Last week, a resident of a still-evacuated luxury high-rise filed a $35 million lawsuit against his condo board and management company, accusing them of "gross negligence" in the wake of Sandy.

The management company, Cooper Square Realty, fired back in a letter from its chief executive, David Kuperberg, claiming that contractors recruited from as far away as Wisconsin and Michigan have been working nonstop to tear out wet walls, carpeting and wallpaper to prevent mold; installing new generators; rebuilding a water pump; and mopping up residue left by oil-tainted salt water.

"While Cooper Square Reality did not cause the storm, the company is doing everything it can" to get people back in their homes, Kuperberg wrote.

The uncertainty also is evident at South Street Seaport, a cluster of early 19th-century mercantile buildings converted to retail shops and apartments. Usually teeming with tourists, the seaport remained a ghost town late last week, despite postcard-perfect weather.

Inside a shut-down brew pub still without lights, workers wearing masks and white jumpsuits scrubbed down the bar, floor and tables. Many businesses, including Ann Taylor, Body Shop and Guess outlets, were still boarded up with plywood.

Also shuttered was "Bodies ... The Exhibition," the show featuring dissected human cadavers that has been a fixture there since 2005. Its website says that due to "damage to our venue, we are closed until further notice."

Some seaport residents have electricity back but no heat or hot water. Liz McKenna, 54, who was living in a third-floor apartment overlooking the East River when a deluge filled the entire first floor with water, said she expects to be able to move back in a couple of weeks ? maybe.

"That's only a guess," she said as she picked up her mail. "Look around. Nobody really knows how bad it is down here. ... We've been ignored."

One of the few businesses to open its doors, Meade's bar and restaurant, had no customers at lunchtime.

"We're open, but who are we open for?" said 28-year-old bartender Nichole Osborne. "All of my regulars are displaced."

An etching on the front window, quoting Dylan Thomas, offered a glimmer of resolve: "Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

UK teen jailed for robbing jewelry stores

LONDON (AP) ? British police say a 16-year-old boy who used prosthetics and dreadlocks to conduct armed robberies in disguise has been jailed for five years.

Police say Miles Alura pretended to be an elderly man with facial prosthetics, make-up and a hair piece to steal 50,000 pounds ($79,500) of jewelry from a shop in Kent in July. They say he produced two handguns and tied up employees before fleeing.

That robbery was linked to one in London a month earlier, when Alura wore fake dreadlocks to rob a jeweler of 100,000 pounds ($159,000) worth of stock.

Alura was jailed Friday at Kingston Crown Crown Court.

Two teenage accomplices who cannot be named for legal reasons were sentenced to three years in jail and a 12-month detention order.

Syria opposition leader still hopes for military aid

DOHA (Reuters) - The new chief of the main Syrian opposition group overseas said on Saturday he still had hope for more military aid from Western powers in the revolt against the rule of Bashar al-Assad.

"Now we will push the Arab countries and the international community to change their position. We need a new decision," George Sabra told Reuters in Doha, where Syrian opposition figures have been meeting for the past week to try to forge a new leadership including activists overseas and in Syria itself.

He spoke after the Syrian National Council (SNC), formed last year as Damascus tried to crush the protest movement for democratic reform, voted him as its new leader on Friday night.

"We need military equipment - rockets against tanks and airplanes to protect ourselves... We hope we will get something soon," said the 65-year-old Sabra, when asked if the SNC had received any assurances of more military support forthcoming.

Sabra, a Christian, takes over a body that has come under heavy criticism from international allies for being ineffective in the fight against the Syrian government, but which says the West has let rebels down by not giving more military aid.

The SNC says that it has been unable to help bring down Assad so far because of the unwillingness of Washington to engage in a military venture similar to the NATO operation that helped bring down Muammar Gaddafi in Libya last year.

Rebel gains have been limited by Assad's control of the skies through his air force in fighting that has devastated Syrian cities. Over 32,000 people have died in what has become a proxy war with international players backing different sides.

The SNC, under Sabra, continued talks in Doha on Saturday with other Syrian factions including representatives of rebel groups inside Syria on forming a new, wider body that hopes to gain international recognition as a government-in-waiting.

    PRESSURE TO JOIN NEW GROUP

Washington, Qatar - which has bankrolled much opposition activity - and other powers are pushing the SNC to agree to water down its influence in the new body, where it is being offered some 40 percent of a 60-seat assembly.

The SNC wants guarantees of more military help for such a new body, proposed by influential businessman Riad Seif with U.S. support. Its backers have talked of winning international recognition as a legitimate representative of the Syrian people.

Sabra is a long-standing critic of Assad who fled the country on foot last year when secret police began targeting prominent pro-democracy campaigners after the uprising began.

The former geography teacher appeared determined that the SNC - a gathering of civilian exiles and political groups - does not lose relevance, indicating that talks over the Seif initiative could be protracted.

"We will put out ideas on the table. But it needs more time," he said, adding the SNC would try to revamp its image inside Syria by building up links with activists on the ground.

"We will democratize relations within the SNC, and we have a new program toward life inside Syria. We will now put most of our efforts, our ideas toward life on the ground," he said.

The group held elections for its leader for the first time this week, after previously choosing a figure from among its executive council.

But the failure of women to win seats on its general assembly last week prompted its founder Adib al-Shishakly to walk out. He also cited a domination of Islamists, a charge often leveled by secularists against the SNC.

But Sabra rejected suggestions that the body is dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood, a moderate Islamist group whose affiliates have come to power in Egypt and Tunisia.

"This is an accusation we hear every day," he said about the Brotherhood, who account for around 25 percent of the SNC's general secretariat. "How can we prove to the international community that there is nothing in that? The Brotherhood is part of the SNC, part of our political life in Syria."

Sabra also played down the presence of jihadist groups among rebels in Syria, saying such talk was "exaggerated".

Al Qaeda-linked militants from Iraq are thought to have joined the fight in Syria, where militants are accused of beheading some of those thought to support Assad and warring against the Alawi sect of Assad and much of the ruling elite.

Sabra said the SNC would appoint some women to the general secretariat to make up for their failure to win seats.

There is No 'I' in Team, Only in Organizations

There is No 'I' in Team, Only in Organizations

The old saying goes, ?there is no ?I? in team,? but recent research by Program on Negotiation faculty member and Harvard Business School Associate Professor Francesca Gino and others suggests that an organization should pay attention to the various individuals it recruits, and by doing so it can improve employee retention and productivity.

Recently featured in?Business Insider, Professor Gino?s research, done in collaboration with colleagues Dan M. Cable and Brad Staats, examines?socialization theory,?or the process of instilling corporate culture into new employees.

Breaking Them In or Revealing Their Best

Her working paper, ?Breaking Them In or Revealing Their Best? Reframing Socialization Around Newcomer Self-Expression,? compares three types of orientation sessions for new employees.

The first type of orientation, focused on the new employee as an individual and her ?best-self,? was contrasted with:

Socialization that focused on organizational identity (emphasizing pride from organizational affiliation)

The organization?s traditional approach, which focused primarily on skills training.

Often when a new hire begins her work at a company, the company will offer various orientation courses to acclimate her to the corporate culture as well as help her internalize its corporate values.

By drawing on ?authenticity research,??Professor Gino argues that if initial training is focused on the employee as an individual, more effective employment relationships result, or as Gino says:

?People work their best when their inner-selves and experiences are aligned with what they do at their job.?

    Authentic Selves

In order to elicit such responses, Gino and her team crafted questions that honed in on individuals traits rather than ask purely task-oriented or work history questions:

    - What is unique about you that leads you to your happiest times and your best performance at work?

    - Your Personal Highlight Reel: Reflect on a specific time ? perhaps on a job, perhaps at home ? when you were acting the way you were ?born to act??

By focusing on the individual rather than the organization?s needs, Gino was able to determine that people valued authenticity in their work environment more than they valued internalizing organizational ethics.

In other words, when developing a corporation orientation or training course, don?t focus on the organization but rather on the individuals hired.

Ryanair CEO: 'Seat belts don't matter'

    23 hrs.

The colorful, attention-loving chief of Ryanair is at it again. The same CEO who suggested installing pay toilets on planes is now revisiting the idea of standing-room-only sections on flights and dissing the safety feature fliers use most.

?Seat?belts don't matter,? Michael O?Leary told The Telegraph. ?If there ever was a crash on an aircraft, God forbid, a seat?belt won?t save you.?

O?Leary is reportedly on a quest to take out the back ten rows of seats on planes so that Ryanair could offer tickets for one pound (about $1.60) to budget travelers willing to spend a flight on their feet in a ?standing cabin.? The Irish airline is already known for its rock-bottom fares and extensive menu of fees for everything from early boarding to excess baggage.

What about the safety of passengers not buckled in? O?Leary told the paper they could just ?hang on to the handle? when necessary and would be ?fine,? adding that there?s little turbulence in Europe to worry about. People traveling by subway or train don?t wear seat?belts, he pointed out.

"The problem with aviation is that for 50 years it's been populated by people who think it's this wondrous sexual experience; that it's like James Bond and wonderful and we'll all be flying first class when really it's just a?...?bus with wings,? O?Leary told The Telegraph.

"If you say to passengers it's ?25 for the seat and ?1 for the standing cabin, I guarantee we will sell the standing cabin first.?

Don?t count on such a cabin ever showing up on any airline in any part of the world, said Todd Curtis, a former Boeing engineer and founder of AirSafe.com.

?What (O?Leary) was saying about getting rid of seat?belts is a non-starter, it?s not realistic, it?s not going to be acceptable to the regulatory authorities,? Curtis told NBC News, adding that he got a chuckle out of O?Leary?s comments.

Seat belts keep passengers safe during turbulence, which can strike unexpectedly and can even happen when the sky appears to be clear, the Federal?Aviation?Administration says. About 58 people are injured in such bumpy rides each year in the United States while not buckled in, according to government statistics.

The FAA requires fliers to have their seat belts fastened when the plane leaves the gate, as it climbs after take-off, during landing and taxi, and whenever the seat belt sign is illuminated during flight. Airlines also often recommend that you stay buckled in at all times, because you never know when something will happen, Curtis added.

Turbulence isn't always the culprit: In 2008, dozens of passengers were hurt when a computer malfunction sent a Qantas flight into a sudden dive, Curtis pointed out.

Then, there?s the issue of O?Leary?s hypothetical standing-room-only section being located in the back of the plane, which is usually the bumpiest section of the cabin, boosting the chances of passengers losing their balance or falling down, Curtis said.

So while O?Leary may be right that flying has become less glamorous and more routine, air travel safety requirements remain the same, he added.

?The basic conditions under which aircraft fly haven?t changed,? Curtis said. ?The need for (seat belts) won?t change.?

O?Leary is known for saying or suggesting controversial things that get lots of publicity for Ryanair. In September, he called passengers who fail to print their Ryanair boarding passes ?stupid.?

In 2010, O?Leary suggested getting rid of co-pilots on planes to save money. Then, of course, there was the idea of charging passengers one euro to use the lavatory on flights lasting 60 to 90 minutes.

In 2009, the airline also brought up the notion of collecting a ?fat tax? from overweight passengers.

None of those ideas have been implemented.

Despite Ryanair's penny-pinching ways and the outrage it often causes, the airline attracts lots of customers. Earlier this month, it reported a 10 percent growth in profits and a 7 percent boost in passengers?for the six-month period that ended in September.

    Samsung Chromebook review (2012)

Whenever we review Chromebooks, we always come to more or less the same conclusion: it's a neat idea, a computer where everything is done online, but it's not worth the money. That was back when Chrome OS devices were priced at $500, competing with netbooks that could run not just the Chrome browser, but all manner of Windows apps. Ditto for tablets, which can be tricked out with many thousands of apps on both iOS and Android.

But what if we told you the price had been slashed to $249? Then could you see yourself pulling the trigger? That's the gamble Google and Samsung are taking with the new Chromebook, which retails for $249 with an 11.6-inch display, 6.5-hour battery and a more compact design. All told, it's as good a piece of hardware as any netbook you'll find, only cheaper. And good luck finding a tablet-and-keyboard combo for less than $250.

There is one major change this time around, though, and that's the Chromebook's dual-core ARM processor, instead of something from Intel's Celeron family. The performance isn't likely to be as good, but will that matter if all you're running is the Chrome browser? Will the lowered price be enough to lure in parents, travelers and other folks looking for a cheap second laptop? Let's see.

It's down 20% from its September 21 intraday high of $705.07, according to Bloomberg data.

Why is the stock on a big losing streak? A bunch of reasons.

One theory being advanced by analysts is that investors are selling shares because they think capital gains taxes are going increase during President Obama's second term.

Another reason is that Foxconn leader Terry Gou said, "It's not easy to make the iPhones. We are falling short of meeting the huge demand."

This quote has a few implications for Apple.

The first, and most obvious implication, is that Apple is not going to have enough phones to meet demand. Therefore it's going to miss on iPhone estimates for the quarter.

Before the iPhone 5 was released, analysts were whispering of about a monster holiday quarter for Apple. They were talking about Apple selling 50 million iPhones. Apple's best iPhone sales quarter was last holiday quarter when it sold 37 million iPhones.

But since the iPhone 5 came out and Apple has struggled to meet demand, estimates have been coming down. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster cut his iPhone forecast by 4 million.

Apple is an iPhone company. So anything that affects sales of the iPhone is going to affect the stock.

But what about the iPad Mini? Shouldn't it make up for falling iPhone sales?

It's selling well, but its a mixed bag if you're an investor. On the one hand Apple is protecting itself from losing sales to smaller tablets by Google and Amazon. On the other hand, the iPad's average selling price is going to collapse even further. And the iPad profit margin will get smaller, bringing down Apple's overall profit margin.

So, even if the iPad Mini is a monster hit, its impact on total sales will be limited. In fact, Munster at Piper didn't adjust his iPad revenue number after the iPad Mini came out. After Apple announced iPad Mini sales, he said, "units may increase driven by iPad Mini, but have a slight cannibalization effect, which, when factoring in the lower average selling price, would result in revenue unchanged."

Returning to the iPhone supply issue, there's another angle to the story.

Tim Cook's specialty is supposed to be supply chain management. He's supposed to be able to forecast iPhone manufacturing. The fact that he got this wrong is not good.

Typically, Apple has a measured product roll out for new gadgets. With the iPhone 5, Cook decided to go with a big product roll out. This gave investors reason for optimism. They thought Apple was going to be able to manufacture boat loads of iPhone 5s, otherwise, why spread the supply thin?

Apple misjudged its ability to make the iPhone 5. And now it can't meet demand.

This isn't a problem if consumers just delay their purchases of iPhone 5s. But, there's a theory being advanced by analyst Walter Piecyk at BTIG that people won't delay purchases of the iPhone 5. Either they will buy someone else's phone, or they will wait for the iPhone 6. If they wait for iPhone 6, then Apple misses out on sales until next year.

In isolation, this wouldn't totally demolish the stock.

But, with the aforementioned tax issue, last week's executive turmoil, and the fact that no one sees Apple releasing a new industry defining product at any point in the near future, suddenly you get a company with oodles of cash, good sales and profit growth diving into a bear market.
