Should I connect with my colleagues on Linkedin | Joined Up ...

by Heather Townsend on August 1, 2012 ? 2 comments

One of the questions I am asked frequently when running training sessions for accountants and lawyers, is should I connect with my colleagues on LinkedIn?

The answer is a resounding yes. For these reasons:

1) It gives you access to your colleagues networks. This enables you to broaden your network, whilst identifying where you may have mutual connections. For example, a client of mine wanted an introduction to a director of a local company to me. I realised I was only one degree of separation away from this director ? and I was connected via Lisa, our chief organiser, who used to work closely with this director in a past life. Without connecting with Lisa, this conversation for my client would have never have happened. Whilst this functionality may be performed for you by your firm?s CRM, often your CRM wouldn?t have this level of detail of the interconnectivity of employees networks.

2) It keeps your connected if either of you leave the firm. For example, you never know when one of your colleagues may leave the firm and go in-house. In fact ex-colleagues who go in-house are very often a good source of potential new business. Without the LinkedIn connection you may losE contact. As a result of publicising on my status update about the FT Guide to Business Networking being published, one of my old team got back in touch and booked me to work with her organisation.

3) You get to learn from each other about where and what you should be doing on LinkedIn. What groups are your colleagues in and contributing to regularly? If you are connected, then you can see this and what activity they are doing in the groups. That way you can find out what are the groups to be in, and also help out your colleaguesmay contributing to their discussions.

Do you agree with me?

Federal appeals panel blocks restrictive Arizona abortion law

The Arizona abortion law barring doctors from terminating pregnancies after 20 weeks was to take effect Thursday. The judges, from the Ninth US Circuit, granted an emergency injunction blocking the law.

The emergency injunction granted by the three-judge panel of the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals prevents the law from taking full effect as scheduled on Thursday.?

The ruling was not a decision on the merits of the law itself, but was still hailed by activists who had appealed to the Ninth Circuit after a lower court judge upheld the measure this week.

?We are relieved that the court blocked this dangerous ban and that women in Arizona will continue to be able to get safe, appropriate medical care,? Alexa Kolbi-Molinas, staff attorney with the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project, said in a statement. ?

The statute, signed on April 12 and known as SB 2036, reduces by three to four weeks the amount of time a woman would have to decide on whether to end her pregnancy or carry the child to term. It allows doctors to perform an abortion after 20 weeks, but only in cases of ?medical emergency.?

Arizona is among 10 states that have enacted laws seeking to regulate the provision of abortions during the time in a pregnancy when the fetus is unable to survive on its own outside the womb.

Doctors consider the point of fetal viability to arrive 23 or 24 weeks into a pregnancy.?

A group of physicians in Arizona asked a federal judge to block the law and rule that it violates a woman?s right to decide whether to have an abortion.?

On Monday, US District Judge James Teilborg found that the state law was a permissible regulation of abortion and did not violate constitutional protections.?

In her motion to the court, Janet Crepps, a lawyer with the Center for Reproductive Rights, said her clients perform more than 50 pre-viability abortions at or after 20 weeks of pregnancy per year.

They were ?very likely to have such a patient within the next several days and almost certain to have such a patient within the next 21 days,? she wrote.

Lawyers for Arizona had urged the Ninth Circuit panel to reject the appeal, saying the lawsuit was an impermissible challenge to an abortion regulation under the terms of a 2007 US Supreme Court precedent.?

Douglas Irish, deputy county attorney in Maricopa County, said in his brief that any challenge to the Arizona law must be made on behalf of a pregnant woman seeking an abortion at or beyond the law?s 20-week limit.

Irish said Supreme Court precedent has shifted since a key ruling in 2007 when the high court approved a ban on so-called partial-birth abortions regardless of when they were performed during a pregnancy.

Arizona lawyers argue that the 2007 decision opens the door to state regulations extending into the pre-viability period of a pregnancy.

The judges ordered both parties to file appellate briefs in September and October. The order said the case would be expedited.

Texas US Senate nominee Cruz credits tea party

HOUSTON (AP) ? Former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz says his victory in a primary runoff for the GOP Senate nomination is a testament to the hard work of tea party leaders and other grass-roots conservatives.

Cruz, who has never held political office, beat Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in Tuesday's runoff.

Cruz told a crowd of more than 200 supporters at a Houston hotel ballroom that every conservative in Texas came together and won the runoff. He thanked his many supporters, including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Cruz was joined on stage by his family.

He says if he wins in November, he will work to repeal President Barack Obama's healthcare reform, "stop the out of control spending and turn around our national debt."

Eve Dishes On Her Past Relationship With 'Stevie J' | Necole Bitchie ...

Tue, Jul 31 2012 by Bitchie Staff | Filed Under: Celebrities

If Eve has ever tuned into ?Love & Hip Hop Atlanta? on a Monday nights to see her ex-boyfriend, Stevie J in action, she probably has thought a time or two, ?Thank God you blew it. I dodged a Bullet?.

Eve recently hosted an ?Intimate Hour? with high school girls in Philly and she revealed her journey of self-discovery, all while touching on her relationship with Stevie. According to Eve, he wouldn?t even be able to see the girl that she is now.

On if Stevie J was her first love:

Yes, Stevie J was my first love.

On how she defines the ?love? between her and Stevie back then
You know what?that was a learning experience. You meet people all the time. We just happen to fall in love. Umm, but thankfully I knew better, I know better, I am happily in love now. And the girl now (referring to herself) he couldn?t even see this. I would be like, ?I?m sorry, we don?t speak the same language!? But you know, it is what it is?.that?s life. Sometimes you meet people who aren?t great for you but thankfully I am in a different place.

On things she would not put up with now that she is older and knows better
When I was younger I didn?t question things but now I am annoying! Like if something doesn?t feel right speak up! If you feel like you are being lied to speak up! If you feel like Sexually he is trying to push you to fast speak up. And let me tell you something. Anybody that knows your worth it will stick around. They might not talk to you about it, they may talk to you about it but if they argue with you or if they call you a name or if they roll out they are not meant to be in your life anyways?.

The Exiles, promoted to the Aviva Premiership on appeal last month and handed an invite into Europe's second tier competition, will tackle the beaten finalists from two seasons ago on Saturday, October 13, in one of a number of intriguing match-ups confirmed by tournament organisers, ERC.

Stade Francais will move to a new Amlin Challenge Cup venue when they take on Grenoble in an all-French Round 2 clash at Stade Oc?ane in Le Havre on Saturday, October 20.

London Wasps, who triumphed back in 2003, will begin their quest for another coveted European title with an Anglo-Welsh tie against Newport Gwent Dragons at Adams Park, while 2008 champions Bath will face an away trip to Bucharest Wolves in Pool 4.

Worcester Warriors, who were defeated by Bath in that 2008 final, will break new ground when they travel to Spain to take on Bizkaia Gernika RT in Pool 2 also on October 13.

Twenty clubs from six countries will compete in the 2012-13 tournament with three clubs - London Welsh, Rugby Mogliano from Italy, and Spain's Bizkaia Gernika RT - making their first appearances in Europe.

Google postponing Nexus Q launch to 'make it better'

Apparently Google's strange little media streamer isn't quite ready for prime time -- not according to the company that made it, at least. The software giant has begun sending out a note to pre-orderers letting them know that the launch of the sphere has been delayed in order to "work on making it even better." The company adds that it's responding to user feedback from previewers who want it to "do even more than it does today." To show that there are no hard feelings, the company will be "extend[ing] [the] Nexus Q preview to our pre-order customers and send[ing] [them] a free device," according to Google. No word on when the device will begin shipping, but the company promised it will be arriving "soon."
