Will 2012 be the year of the Duck?

What?s really at stake this November? The stark difference between the economic philosophies of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney? The choice between a headlong plunge into job-killing socialism and an enshrinement of heartless, predatory greed? The makeup of the Supreme Court for the next generation?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. But for me, that?s not what?s really at stake. For me, this election threatens to invalidate my most enduring--make that my only enduring--contribution to American political discourse. It is highly possible that this is the year that Bugs Bunny loses.

Back in 2008, I presented to an anxiously waiting world a Meta Theory of Recent Presidential Elections, encapsulated by the idea that ?Bugs Bunny always beats Daffy Duck.?

As drawn by the Warner Bros. legend Chuck Jones, ?Bugs and Daffy represent polar opposites in how to deal with the world,? I argued. ?Bugs is at ease, laid back, secure, confident. ... Daffy Duck, by contrast, is ever at war with a hostile world. He fumes, he clenches his fists, his eyes bulge, and his entire body tenses with fury. His response to bad news is a sibilant sneer (?Thanks for the sour persimmons, cousin!?). Daffy is constantly frustrated, sometimes by outside forces, sometimes by his own overwrought response to them.?

The Bugs-Daffy frame is another way of saying that ever since the dawn of television put the public personalities of candidates front and center, the one who is more comfortable in his or her own skin always prevails against the more uptight, rigid foe. Think JFK-Nixon, Reagan-Carter, Clinton-Bush I, Bush II-Gore, Bush II-Kerry.

Four years ago, in his primary battle against Hillary Clinton and in the general election contest against John McCain, Barack Obama was clearly Bugs. Clinton and McCain took on the role of Daffy. Who can forget McCain, in the midst of one debate, scornfully pointing a figure at Obama and calling him ?that one??

[Related: Obama's economic record a 'twig to hang onto']

And it?s apparent this year that Obama is clearly more Bugs, and Mitt Romney more Daffy. Romney may be the only person in human existence who laughs by emitting an unsettling ?HA HA HA.? His efforts to ingratiate himself with his audiences--?I love cars?, ?the trees are the right height?--reek of performance anxiety, a fear of spontaneity.

[Related: Obama campaign hits Romney with Trump's 'birther' claims]

The Bugs-Daffy approach--I?d call it a ?meme? if I knew what the hell a ?meme? was--suggests that Obama should be gliding toward a comfortable re-election. That is distinctly not the case. The polls are even, and they are close enough in enough key states to make the race a toss-up. Democratic voices from James Carville to Bill Galston say the same thing.

And that has forced me to take another look at my theory, with some unsettling results.

History suggests that Daffy Duck can sometimes win. The most obvious, in-your-face example is Richard Nixon in 1968. There was no more uptight, how-can-I-pretend-I?m enjoying-this, sweat-flop-coated public figure than Nixon. Yet he prevailed. How? First, Hubert Humphrey was no Bugs Bunny. Second, Nixon did blow a 15-point lead, and might well have lost had his campaign allies not persuaded South Vietnam to sabotage peace negotiations. And third, Nixon?s demeanor suggested a return to a time before turmoil roiled the land.

That last point has a broader echo. There are times when a candidate?s lack of personality can turn into an asset. For most of his first term, New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg languished in public approval ratings. He was distant, aloof, just what you might expect from a multi-billionaire with more homes than most of us have shoes. But somewhere into his third year, things changed. His liabilities became assets. See? He?s not pandering; he says what he thinks; he?s not running for something, he?s governing. That change in perception made Bloomberg a highly popular mayor?at least until he bought and bullied his way to a third-term.

During this fourth straight year of economic anxiety, Romney?s stolid, Type A personality may not be the campaign liability many of us assumed it would be. If the economic atmosphere continues to be cloudy with a chance of rain, voters (or at least enough of them) may decide, No, I don?t want to have a beer with him, but maybe he can do a better job of getting the economy right than the guy we have now.

There?s no way President Obama can lose the Bugs-Daffy battle. Mitt Romney is not going to be slow-jamming the news with Jimmy Fallon or crooning a few bars from ?Let?s Stay Together.? But I?m less convinced than I once was that once you?ve figured out who Bugs is, the only thing left to say is ?Th-th-th-that?s all, folks.?

Sprint set to shut down its iDEN network as early as next summer

Sprint

Sprint announced today that service on its iDEN network will cease as early as June 30, 2013, and that it will begin transitioning customers to its Direct Connect service in the coming months. The transition is part of the carrier's "Network Vision" and will allow Sprint to reassign its 2G spectrum, which currently supports the iDEN network, for its upcoming LTE rollout. Sprint will begin contacting government and business customers shorty urging them to make the move, and will discontinue selling iDEN products over the next few months. If your heart is set on beep-beeping your way into 2013, Sprint's Motorola Admiral is a fine Android-powered choice. Sprint's full presser can be found after the break.

Garage Equipment For Your Home Garage

We just finally bought a house which has a garage. Because I am a man who loves to tinker with cars this was a dream comes true. I have often have wanted to restore an old car and now I had the room to do it. But I was not entirely sure the best Garage equipment that I would need. A friend of mine works on cars for a living and I knew that I could talk to him and see what kind of equipment he keeps in his garage.

?

Well I definitely went to the right place. He quickly showed me and told me all of the equipment and tools I would need. He of course said you need a decent size tool box filled with all of the basic tools. Screwdrivers in both Flathead and Phillips, wrenches in all sizes and in metric and standard measurements were on the top of his list.

He also said I would need a socket wrench with a racket. Adjustable wrenches were also a good thing to have. He added a tape measure, pliers and a hammer need to be in your Car tools box also.

?

He showed me his vehicle lift. He said that every garage should have one if you are going to do any work on a vehicle at all. He said there were all kinds that I could find one that would best suit my needs and the size of my garage.

?

He showed me an air compressor next. He said, again there were many kinds but they were nice to have around to pump air into any tire. Three more things he said I would be smart to have are a Grease pump, fluid evaluator and brake bleeder. He said especially if I was going to be doing a lot of work on cars.

?

These three pieces of equipment would allow me to change fluids on my own. He said I would also need a set of ramps and a good jack. He said there were so many other pieces I could buy but because some of this stuff ran into some cash that I needed to buy the basic items and slowly build from there.

?

I went home with my head filled with Garage Equipment . I started looking around to find the best tools at the best price. I looked for a lift and all of the other parts he had talked about. It took me a few months but I eventually had my garage filled with most of the tools I would need and had already found the perfect car to start on.

(AP) ? A big early Miami lead was wasted. Once the Heat took control again, they simply ran away from the Boston Celtics.

And the NBA finals are now three wins away for LeBron James and the Heat.

James scored 32 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, Dwyane Wade scored 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and the Heat beat the Celtics 93-79 on Monday night in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Shane Battier, playing in the conference finals for the first time, scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds for the Heat, who wasted an early 11-point first-half lead before running away to break a halftime tie. Miami outrebounded the Celtics 48-33, and blocked 11 Boston shots.

It was those last two stats that had James lauding the night as a team effort.

"We get a lot of the press, we get a lot of the headlines," James said. "But our teammates, they do everything to help us win ball games."

Kevin Garnett scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Boston, which got 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists from Rajon Rondo and 12 points from Paul Pierce. Ray Allen shot just 1 for 7 from the floor for Boston, which was outscored by 10 in the first quarter and 11 in the third.

"On the road, you can't have two quarters of lulls," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said.

Game 2 is Wednesday night in Miami.

It's the third straight year the Heat and Celtics have met in the playoffs, the third straight year James has seen his postseason path go through Boston as well ? the first of those matchups coming in 2010, his final run with Cleveland.

Each of those came in the first or second rounds, not this close to the NBA finals.

And while both sides would say there's a long way to go in this series, Game 1 winners have a decided edge in any best-of-seven, the conference final being no exception. In the most recent 10 postseasons, teams with 1-0 leads in conference finals have advanced 15 out of 20 times. One of the five instances of a team rallying from a one-game deficit was last year, when Miami ousted Chicago in five games.

Last season's Miami-Boston series ended with James scoring the final 10 points of Game 5, and the start of this year's matchup had him putting on another offensive display.

He had 13 points in the first quarter ? two more than the entire Celtics roster ? and Miami ran out to a 21-11 lead after the opening period. Garnett made three of his four shots in the quarter, while everyone else in Boston green was 2 for 16 from the floor.

"They came to play," Rivers said. "I mean Miami."

The 11 points matched the lowest output by any team in the opening quarter this postseason. The other team to manage that few was San Antonio, which then dropped 32 on the Los Angeles Clippers in the second quarter of their game on May 19.

The Celtics' response was even better.

Boston scored 35 in the second quarter, erasing what was an 11-point deficit early in the period by scoring 27 points in the final 8:46 of the half to pull into a 46-all tie. Rondo, Garnett and Pierce combined to score 23 points in the quarter, looking absolutely vintage, near-perfect offensive execution getting to Miami time and time again. And the Celtics' comeback happened even while they got hit with three technical fouls in the second quarter, plus Allen missing four first-half free throws ? matching his career-worst for an entire game.

In the end, it went down as merely a one-quarter lapse for Miami.

Another technical foul, this one on Rondo, came in the third quarter, likely born from frustration as the Heat started to roll again.

With the game tied at 50, Rondo missed three shots in a 31-second span early in the third, the last of those getting blocked by Battier ? who hit a 3-pointer 11 seconds later. It started a 9-2 Miami burst, including a touchdown pass from Wade to James ? Wade grabbed the rebound of a miss by Pierce, spun and delivered a 90-foot pass to the reigning MVP ? for an easy score.

Miami led by as many as 13 late in the third, before taking a 72-61 lead into the fourth. James scored 10 more in the third, Boston went cold again shooting just 27 percent in the period, and Wade's left-handed bullet pass into the lane set up Joel Anthony for a dunk that pushed the Heat lead to 15 with 10:13 remaining.

"We'll go back and see what we can do better," Rivers said. "And we'll fix it."

NOTES: Heat coach Erik Spoelstra is now 6-0 in Game 1s at home. ... James passed Sam Jones (2,909) for 22nd on the NBA's playoff scoring list with a layup late in the first quarter, and Garnett passed Dirk Nowitzki (1,314) for 22nd on the league's postseason rebound list. ... The Heat left the floor at halftime with a 48-46 lead, then had two points by Anthony taken off after a lengthy reviewed showed he had a basket after the shot clock expired. ... Miami F Chris Bosh did a light pregame workout, but still remains out indefinitely with a lower abdominal strain. He was on the Heat bench for the first time in Miami's last six games.

Therapies for Autism - TheHealthCast.com

Doubt Cast on Usefulness of ?Sensory? Therapies for Autism

Experts say proof is lacking for these techniques in other disorders, too

MONDAY, May 28 (HealthDay News) ? Sensory therapies using brushes, swings and other play equipment are increasingly used by occupational therapists to treat children with developmental issues such as autism, but a large pediatricians organization says there isn?t much evidence that such therapies actually work.

Still, the group isn?t completely discounting the potential of sensory therapies ? it?s a ripe area for research, it noted.

But before parents spend the time and money on taking children to sensory therapy, they should know that, as of now, the techniques are largely unproven.

?It?s OK for parents to try these types of therapies, but there is little research backing up the effectiveness of these therapies and whether or not they improve long-term outcomes for kids with developmental disabilities,? said Dr. Michelle Zimmer, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children?s Hospital Medical Center.

Zimmer is the co-author of a new American Academy of Pediatrics policy statement on what is often referred to as ?sensory integration therapy.? The policy statement appears online May 28 and in the June print issue of Pediatrics.

According to the pediatrician group, ?sensory processing disorder? should not be used as a standalone diagnosis.

No one disputes that children with conditions such as autism can have abnormalities in their responses to sensory stimuli, including sight, taste, touch and sound. For example, autistic children may have aversions to loud noises, to certain food textures or to being touched unexpectedly, Zimmer said.

But that doesn?t necessarily mean the problem is with their brain pathways for processing sensory information, as the term ?sensory processing disorder? implies.

Instead, some other issue could underlie their reactions to stimuli, such as a behavioral issue, said Dr. Susan Hyman, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics subcommittee on autism and an associate professor of pediatrics at University of Rochester Medical Center, in Rochester, N.Y.

Instead of chalking up various aversions or compulsions to sensory processing disorder, health care providers need to consider what other developmental issues may be going on with the child, such as autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and so on, Zimmer said.

?There has never been a study that has shown that a child can have just sensory processing disorder, isolated from another developmental disabilities, such as autism or ADHD,? Zimmer said.

Sensory integration therapy got its start in the 1970s, when an occupational therapist described a theory for how a well-organized sensory system develops. Children, the therapist postulated, gradually learn to make use of information from a variety of sources at the same time in order to understand the world. The theory is that sensory dysfunction occurs when these systems don?t develop correctly.

In sensory integration therapy, occupational therapists put children on a ?sensory diet,? exposing them to different sights, smells, sounds and sensations, to improve the brain?s ability to process the information.

For now, however, whether it works remains a theory, Zimmer said.

Zimmer noted that occupational therapists in her hospital?s autism center uses sensory therapies, and anecdotally, she?s seen sensory therapy appear to help some children.

?We are happy to support parents who want to try to these therapies, but we also need to use caution in making sure that the use of these therapies is improving some outcome for their child,? Zimmer said.

In the absence of controlled clinical trials testing whether sensory therapies work, parents have to try to be objective, ask themselves tough questions about whether the treatment is really working, set specific goals and determine if the child is moving toward the target.

?Is it improving the child?s ability to function? That?s where more research needs to happen,? Zimmer said.

Hyman, who studies sensory differences in children with autism, agreed. ?The scientific testing of this intervention has not demonstrated that it is effective for all children as a standalone treatment,? she said. ?However, for individual children, it may be an important part of a total therapy package.?

Pediatricians should counsel families about the information out there on sensory therapies, she added.

?You don?t want to spend a lot of time money and energy on a treatment if it?s not right for them. They have to be prudent,? Hyman said. ?In the absence of data, parents have to utilize the information that?s available to them in making choices.?

Hard Road Trio Headed for Central Texas

Hard Road TrioThe Hard Road Trio took the long road to get to a place where their music feels at home. With their original Southwestern acoustic blend of Americana and Bluegrass music from the wide-open spaces of New Mexico, The Hard Road Trio -- mandolinist Steve Smith, guitarist/vocalist Chris Sanders and bassist Anne Luna -- is the amalgamation of three songwriters who have found their collective voice in the light and air of the Southwest.

The Hard Road Trio channeled their energy and captured their authentic sound on their new recording, Monticello. "We set up and recorded so much of this material live," says Smith. "It breathes." That live connection is captured in full force on their latest release. It has been hailed for its honesty and power by folk icon Tom Russell saying, "This fine CD reminds me of the raw and colorful beauty of the New Mexico landscape."

MonticelloTogether, The Trio writes crisp, soothing ("Best of Intentions") and personal ("Family Secrets") songs filled with clever melodies ("Honeymoon From..."), and throughout peaceful harmonies - music steeped in folk classicism that shows its live appeal in every telling verse. Monticello includes guest appearances by Michael Witcher, Nate Lee, Tim May, Bill Evans and co-producer James McLaughlin.

The album is Hard Road's fourth and the first to include bassist Luna, who has helped steer the group's path and bring their live energy into the studio. Luna also contributed the song "Break Free," which, with its slinky jazz bass line and breathy vocals, brings a darker edge to the disc. Come out to enjoy their show! (http://hardroadtrio.com)

fourinsight ? Real-Time Planning: Strategic Planning's Best Friend

by Cat Fraser

Yesterday I was asked a question by a client that prompted this blog post: ?what do you mean by Strategic Planning??

It is still a good and very valid question, as in my experience people come at this practice from lots of different angles, processes and models which makes for a mix of ideas and egos wanting their own stamp on it as the next Drucker or Kotler.

My ideas are also changing, partly down to the open-ness and accessibility of courses across the pond (through iTunes University, I am currently a virtual student at Cranfield, Harvard and Duke ? to name just a few of the Strategy, Social Business and Management tutorials I plug into regularly!), but also down to the disruption real-time data is having on brand strategy.

As University business courses have taught us, Strategic Planning has been embedded in the design process for Advertising and Branding Agencies. Now however the younger Media Agencies, ?Social Media Agencies and Digital Agencies are also now accepting that they need Planning roles to ensure their work is rooted in insight.

This is great, but often they try to short-cut and tag on ?Strategy? as part of an Account Manager?s role to save cash. I?m not convinced this works ? strategy works best when it is outside of all the day-to-day which is fundamentally the Account Manager?s existence. (Stepping away from it all and thinking long-term, is a hard task when you have deadlines piling up and your mind is in a million places ? and I speak from experience). I therefore strongly assert that Strategy should be separated as?it requires a different type of person, skill-set and problem solving technique.

However despite my love for Planning, I can also see its downfall.

An Account Manager has the ability to react to a client situation and change strategic course to protect or optimise activity at any given moment ? and a Brand Manager also needs to be able to do the same. However being restricted by the confines of Strategy can prevent creativity and scope of what they can/ cannot do, often at the most critical, high-profile moment that the brand faces.

This is particularly true for Social Media crisis moments, where quick thinking is paramount and however useful the Strategic Planning was that got the ?attention of a global public in the first place, it is now redundant. Influencers have taken hold of an issue and are rapidly un-doing costly brand work, which traditional research methods would take far too long to investigate.

Consequently, those responsible with the day-to-day are left to manage the Strategy with no time for pre-testing, testing and post-testing that Strategic Planning advocates.

This is the new reality that I feel Strategic Planning faces and a key challenge for Social Business.

Fourinsight therefore views Real-Time Planning as Strategic Planning?s much-needed companion ? together the two work hand-in-hand, feeding continuous insight and strategy from Social Media Intelligence and other real-time data to ensure Strategic Planning and the rest of the organisation are continually up-to-date and their strategies are on-par with what the rest of the world is thinking.

?

Real-Time Planning AND Strategic Planning

Moreover, Real-Time Planning offers continuous feedback on Strategic Ideas so Strategic Planning can be tasked with designing and delivering the Strategy that best fits the organisation ? without waiting for lengthy research programmes to feedback or out-of-date market reports.

?

The Fourinsight Real-time Planning Reports use a simple three step model:

?

Fourinsight Real-Time Planning ModelWe work closely as a partner to our Agency and Brand Strategy Clients?to devise the necessary Strategic Lens to view Social Media data, whilst ensuring that information being fed back is always actionable,?accountable?and valuable.

I am confident this model will develop over time, but I feel the key is to keep it simple so that the focus is on the data, its manipulation and moulding into business actions for Short-Term and Long-Term Strategy ? ?which should then be fed back into the Strategic Planning process as we know it in a continuous cycle of refinement and sense-checking.

Diabetes Treatment - Potential New Target - Kiefit.com

The online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reports that Cincinnati University (UC) researchers have discovered that apolipoprotein A-IV (apoA-IV), a naturally produced protein that has the ability to reduce blood sugar levels and enhance insulin secretion, could be a potential target for a new diabetes treatment. ApoA-IV is a protein secreted by the small intestine in response to fat absorption. According to earlier studies, apoA-IV is elevated in individuals following gastric bypass surgery, which is linked to improved symptoms in diabetes...

Union leader says NFL doesn?t deny collusion

NFL Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith speaks as (from 2nd L) Tony Richardson, Domonique Foxworth and Charlie Batch look onduring a press conference held by the NFL Players Association at the Super Bowl XLVI Media Center in the J.W. Marriott Indianapolis on February 2, 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? NFL players union chief DeMaurice Smith says his group?s claim of collusion will stand up in court.

The NFL Players Association claimed in U.S. District Court in Minnesota on Wednesday that the 32 teams had a secret salary cap in place during the uncapped 2010 season, and that it cost players at least $1 billion in wages.

?Cartels do what cartels will do when left unchecked,? Smith said Thursday outside union headquarters. ?The facts justify the complaint.?

On Wednesday, hours after the court action, the NFL issued a statement saying ?the union?s claims have absolutely no merit and we fully expect them to be dismissed.?

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello also said: ?There was no collusion. There was no agreement. These claims are totally unfounded.?

The union has spent much of the offseason challenging the league on a variety of issues ? from punishment handed down by Commissioner Roger Goodell for the alleged roles of four players in the Saints? bounties program to appeals in drug-related discipline. Now comes the court action in Minnesota, filed one day after the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys had grievances dismissed after having their salary caps reduced for this season and next.

The Redskins are losing $36 million and the Cowboys $10 million for overspending during the uncapped season ? a revelation that, in part, spurred the union?s claim of collusion.

?When we feel those rules are violated, we will, on behalf of our players, always act in their best interest,? Smith said.

?The 32 teams are defendants of the action right now. If there is evidence that is developed later on that would demonstrate that any one of those teams did not abide by the conspiracy, then my guess is those teams will make the appropriate assertions, and we?ll see where we end up.?

The complaint claims that ?conspiracy? set a $123 million salary cap for the 2010 season, when owners did not have the authority to do so.

According to the league, the CBA signed last August to end the 4 1-2 month lockout had clauses precluding the union from filing such a complaint. But NFLPA outside counsel Jeffrey Kessler disputed that Wednesday, saying a portion of those clauses was rejected by the court.

?It doesn?t sound like you?re denying the existence of collusion, does it?? Smith said.

As for the discord between the union and the league, Smith said it shouldn?t be surprising.

?We all got along, and the league locked us out,? Smith said. ?We certainly had players across history who left every bit of blood, sweat and tears on the field. And yet, the National Football League continues to fight us on a number of workers? comp cases.?

Focus and causality: two lingering lessons from Steve Jobs biography

Two themes run across the dense and well-timed Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson that came out last fall.

The unfaltering focus and dependable insensitivity of Jobs, so, having just finished it myself, I?ve been left trying to find causality: did those two qualities make him a better CEO and Apple a better company?

For focus, I believe it?s unquestionable: make fewer products and make them better. It?s the complete opposite of the market share angle of, say, spaghetti sauces. The second has me more uncertain, particularly when the success of Jobs is seen as motivation to drive employees to the edge.

Throughout Isaacson?s book, there are tales of the people who rejected how Jobs treated them and left, and then there were those who were motivated by Jobs and, often they said, did the best work of their lives. If that happened, I?m uncomfortable with thinking it was much more than an exception ? being ruthless gets you further faster, but I?m not convinced there?s any real lesson for longer, sustained growth, despite Jobs and Apple.

On the contrary, I was most moved by the stories of Jobs listing the products his company was working on and cutting all but the most important and relevant. It sounded like the kind of broad goal work that my colleagues do and aspire to do better.

In 2011, I tried to focus my professional efforts, and while this year I?ve wanted to do better at risking, to improve my chances at success, limiting the projects I?m involved in seems to be an increasingly top priority.

Reading the Jobs book ? full of interesting anecdotes from great reporting ? just may help me do that. As always, I share a slew of notes below.

  • Silicon Valley roots (p.9) ? I am always interested in the descriptions of how regions, like the Silicon Valley, developed, and here Isaacson centers on the growth of missile contractors and R&D spending.
  • ?Engineering is the highest level of importance you can reach in the world? ? Steve Wozniak (p. 22)
  • Difference between hardware and software guys (p. 24) ?? Wozniak tells the story of hardware guys being used to getting shocked from doing the hard work.
  • Teenage Jobs shunned his parents (p. 34) ? During a campus visit: that sounds like a lot of whiny kids.
  • Calligraphy class led to Mac fonts (p. 41) ? Jobs sat in on a Calligraphy class while at Reed, which he says developed his admiration for the design of typefaces.
  • Jobs mediation following Eastern trip (p. 49) ? Led to a lifelong pursuit of the spiritual
  • ?Initially the technologists and the hippies did not interface well.? (p 57) ? Jobs and Apple helped grow that relationship.
  • ?I see God in the instruments and mechanisms that work reliably.? (p. 58) Buckminster Fuller
  • Wozniak makes and Jobs sells (p. 60) ? the beginning of the role development
  • First annual Personal Computer Festival (p. 70) ? In Atlantic City, Wozniak and Jobs flew to Philadelphia and then drove to show off the Apple I.
  • Reserve stock for investors (p. 77) ? Wozniak, Jobs and Mike Markkula, who put up $250k, each got 26% of original Apple ownership and the rest was reserved for investors.
  • Empathy, focus and impute (p. 78) ? The original three values of Apple, most prominently, for me, was the second: ?we must eliminate all of the unimportant opportunities.?
  • Trading investment for insight (p. 96) ? Jobs gave up part of his company for investment and the chance to see Xerox?s secret graphical interface, a major commercial breakthrough that Apple brought to market.
  • ?Because I didn?t know it couldn?t be done, I was enabled to do it.? (p. 100) Bill Atkinson on developing the overlapping feature of files and folders that we take for granted on computers today.
  • Wozniak gave out shares, Jobs didn?t (p. 105) ? Where Wozniak made sure all of his employees and friends made out well when Apple when public in 1980, Jobs certainly did not.
  • Product price pipeline (p. 113) ? In a new industry, first you build a great expensive product to show off its power, then create cheaper, commoditized versions. Jobs battled with Macintosh project lead Jeff Raskin for many reasons: Raskin wanted the cheaper product first, but it wasn?t ready to wow anyone.
  • The reality distortion field (p. 117) ? throughout the book, stories are shared of Jobs ignoring facts and pushing forward, sometimes leading to improbable success ? and sometimes not.
  • Philadelphia?s Susan Kare designed the Mac fonts (p. 130) ? And as we have reported, they were originally named for the Philadelphia transit stops, but Jobs renamed them.
  • Gates did not see Jobs as competition at first (p. 173)
  • Jobs thought Gates ripped Apple off, but Gates thought they both stole from Xerox (p. 178)
  • Steve Jobs freaked out about a hotel arrangement (p. 188) ? he was a whiny dick
  • Jobs spent $100,000 on a logo for his new company NeXT (p. 220)
  • After denying Wozniak the right to use a design he made while at Apple, Jobs then wants to be able to use the Apple design firm Frogdesign after he leaves the company (p. 221) ? Lots of examples of his hypocrisy here
  • Perfection over shipping it (p. 223) He lost a bet by shipping his Macintosh later than Apple?s LISA computer to make sure it met his specifications.
  • ?I pick the jockeys and the jockeys pick the horses and ride them.? (p. 227) said Ross Perot
  • Gates wanted compatibility and Jobs wanted control (p. 230) ? A central theme in the Microsoft and Apple wars was Jobs?s focus on owning every step of hardware to software to product
  • Whoever starts the meeting is in control (p. 239) ? Executives tried to have everyone at a meeting on time and then have the CFO come in to determine his control. Instead, Jobs just started without him.
  • Let customers find uses for your product (p. 241) as Jobs tried to do with Macinstosh and Pixar
  • Art and tech, like Macintosh and then Pixar, defined jobs when at his best (p. 244) ? You need to find what defienes your best work
  • Steve Jobs falls for a Penn undergrad (p. 261)
  • Jobs struggled with a relationship with his kids and wife (p. 283)
  • Like Disney head, Jobs was a tyrant with the gift of gab (p. 285)
  • Toy Story was bad at first draft because bosses meddled (p. 287) ? Protect creativity
  • Photos: Leonardo said good artists copy, great artists steal. Jobs said this about taking from IBM for Lisa computer but criticized Microsoft for stealing from Apple
  • Know what you want in negotiations (p. 301) ? Jobs negotiated with NeXT purchase by Apple and had to have known what was his ideal, his moderate success and his minimum for accepting.
  • Pictures page 7: We don?t do market research because customers don?t know what they want until we tell them.
  • Competition is good (p. 334) ? Jobs liked to stoke up rivalries, like he did with IBM, Microsoft and then with Dell.
  • Microsoft licensed out its OS and recommended Apple do the same (p. 335) ? they didn?t
  • (early In Book someone else recommends apple company name, jobs mistakenly wanted to change it)
  • Make four great products (p. 337) ? When Jobs came back to the role, he cut 70 percent of their lingering products and variations and focused.
  • For some design is veneer, but to Jobs it is fundamental soul (p. 343)
  • People do judge by the cover, so act like it (p. 347)
  • No analysis for the signature iMac translucency (p. 350) ? Even though it cost more than three times standard casing
  • Apple only hires A players (p. 363) ? and he pushed out those who weren?t
  • Company would list 10 biggest priorities and then only do the top three (p. 379) ? He also notes here that often after 30-years-old, people develop rigid set of thinking and are less innovative
  • It was a mistake ignoring the CD burning craze at first (p. 382)
  • iTunes sold million songs in six days (p. 403)
  • Sony had strict corporate divisions (p. 407) ? and so they failed to innovate by working together
  • Bob Dylan?s talks about his writing style when meeting Jobs (p. 415) ? Dylan said of writing songs: ?they just came through me, it wasn?t like I was having to compose them. That doesn?t happen anymore, I just can?t write them that way anymore. But I can still sing them.?
  • The job of an artist is to chase ugliness away (p. 423)
  • To succeed, Jobs needed a foil to challenge him (p. 427)
  • Physical presence, a headquarters, does a lot for company culture, through in person meetings and collaboration, said Jobs (p. 430) ? Spent considerable money and time on this
  • Jobs on Disney?s Eisner (p. 437) ? When Eisner couldn?t just be creative, he faltered
  • Scared of surgery so ignored it (p. 454)
  • Memento mori (p. 461) ? Remember you will die
  • Apple University (p. 461) ? Focus on culture
  • Developed ipad and then iPhone (p. 467) ? But the time was right, so it held back on iPad
  • FingerWorks (p. 469) ? Company from University of Delaware had the multi-touch glass technology
  • Jobs lied about his health to shareholders (p. 480)
  • Once someone dies, off the record often goes out the window (p. 482)
  • In hospital, Jobs complained about the design of his oxygen tube (p. 486)
  • Jobs replacement Tim Cook gave a great speech after Jobs left his role (p. 488)
  • Bill Gates gives some lukewarm praise of the iPad (p. 495)
  • the App Store was part of the Internet evolution (p. 502)
  • Who cares about Turkish coffee? (p. 528) ? Jobs on why the global revolution makes products like Apple more valuable, by bringing together world culture
  • Biology will be the next revolution, says Jobs (p. 539) ? the web and digital world has gone shallow
  • Apple would need 30,000 engineers to have all its operations in the United States (p. 546) ? But the education system isn?t there and so those jobs won?t come here, Jobs told President Obama.
  • Magician genius (p. 566) ? Mark Kac called a magician genius: someone whose insights come out of the blue and require intuition more than mere mental processing power.
  • Jobs gives advice to incoming Google CEO Larry Page (p. 552) ? Focus and keep it simple: Microsoft tried to do everything and it made worse products for it.
  • Built an efficient company (p. 562) ? Had 7% of the industry?s revenue, but 35% of its profit
  • Did Jobs? ?nasty edge? help? (p. 565)
  • How to build a company, says Jobs (p. 569) I have my own theory about why decline happens at companies like IBM or Microsoft. The company does a great job, innovates and becomes a monopoly or close to it and some field, and then the quality of the product becomes less important. the company starts valuing the great salesman, because they?re the ones who can move the needle on revenues, not the product engineers and designers. So the sales people end up running the company.

Paul Ratner: 10 App Ideas to Transform Culture

One prerogative of people who opine online is their ability to pontificate on how they can do things better than [insert person/activity here]. So here is my list of phone app ideas that can transform culture. These don't exist yet as far as I know. Maybe some of these are brewing already in some app maven's mind, and I hope this type of brainstorming can inspire someone out there to make these apps a reality. There are so many useless things we can already do with our phones, why not try doing something that can change our lives and make it a more interesting world for all?

World is a Stage app -- a twist on flash mobs -- app connects people who'll get together briefly and interact with each other not as themselves but as characters of their choosing. You'll be able to create characters within the app and include all relevant info so that people may be able to invite you to join private gatherings. Let's say you want to pretend to be a lawyer or an army guy or a top chef -- just create your identity within the app (which will guide you with helpful questions) and meet up with others with pretend identities and have yourself a great time out from your life!

Dumb Your Phone app -- helps you fight the addiction to your smartphone. Basically deactivates your phone for a full 24 hours. Once you activate the app, you won't be able to use your phone no matter what you do (only resetting and wiping all data can restart it before the 24 hours are through).

Culturize Yourself app -- gives you cultural/historical highlights of places right next to you, allowing you to quickly have an intelligent-sounding conversation with anyone you might be with (and need to impress). Great for dates.

Change the World app -- the app will do to changing the world what "American Idol" does to [not sure what AI does]. App allows people to vote on the most pressing world problem and concrete proposals on how to fix them (illustrated by an attractive spokesperson). Each vote costs you 5 cents and all the submitted money is collected in a pool. The winning problem/proposal gets the funding and matching funds from corporate sponsors. An implementation deadline is attached to every proposal so actual changes can be tracked.

Talk to Aliens app -- allows you to talk to Aliens. You can send messages (or confessions) to aliens on a planet of your choice. A powerful transmitter run by the app producer or NASA-like agency broadcasts the messages. App can be used to raise financing for space programs. Will the aliens ever respond? We won't know till we do this. There's been a certain highfalutin assumption that aliens would love to hear Bach or some great accomplishment of our civilization but it's just as likely they'll respond to ramblings of a teenage girl.

Stop Cursing and Be Nice app -- promotes civility in everyday life. Rewards you for being nice and courteous to others. You can track how many greetings you've made or "thanks" you've said throughout the day. Also tracks your swear words. The best implementation would be for the app to be able to do a voice analysis on the data passing through the phone to pick out the nice words. Nicest people will get financial rewards from sponsors -- coupons, deals, public recognition. The worst offenders will get higher phone bills and public shame.

Get Off Drugs app -- does what it says. Helps people with drug problems to get off drugs with functions like allowing them track their progress of decreasing drug usage (with a reward-based system that gives them financial or social benefits for decreased drug use). Shows their location and heartbeat info to sponsors, connects them with other people near them who are having the same challenges. Shows pictures and videos of addicted people's demise due to drug use.

Learn a Poem a Day app -- helps you memorize a poem a day. Gives you tools and rewards to help with the memorization. Great for increasing your cultural and romantic potency.

Pavlov's Dog app -- not what you might first think -- this is an app that can turn you into a dog. Good for people who want a break from being human. Leads you through activities a typical dog might engage in. You do each one for a specific time length as your phone takes pics and puts online. Works best if utilized near other users of app or an actual dog or instead of group yoga at your company. The idea can be expanded to simulating behavior of other animals. Can also call it DOG OUT as in "let's have a DOGOUT for the next fifteen minutes"...

Laugh at People Next to You app -- admittedly this probably doesn't have any positive transformative effects but wouldn't it be nice some times to snap a pic of someone you just find looking silly or doing something goofy and put it up for everyone else to gander at and perhaps rate (there being awards for goofiest person of the day etc)?
