Linksys WUMC710 Wireless-AC Wi-Fi 5GHz Universal Media Connector Bridge with 4-Port Switch

Cisco Linksys' WUMC710 AC Wi-Fi Universal Media Connector Bridge is Linksys' pre-draft 802.11ac companion bridge to the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router AC 1750HD Video Pro EA6500 its newly released pre-draft 802.11ac router. While the Linksys media bridge did not give any noticeable performance boosts in streaming media, such as I witnessed with Buffalo's AirStation AC1300/N450 4-Port Gigabit Dual Band Wireless Ethernet Bridge WLI-H4-D1300 , Linksys' unit is a bit less expensive at $159.99 than the $179.99 Buffalo bridge, is very easy to set up, and is a decent way to connect devices such as gaming consoles, NASes, or smart TVs, to your home network.

What's a media bridge useful for? Say you have a smart TV in your downstairs entertainment room and a wireless router in your upstairs home office. You want Internet access for your smart TV, but it doesn't have built-in wireless connectivity. You can place a media bridge near that TV, connect the bridge wirelessly to the router upstairs, and then connect the TV to the bridge via an Ethernet cable. This will put the TV on your home network and bring it Internet access.

Specs
The WUMC710 has four Gigabit Ethernet ports?as most media bridges. The front panel includes a WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) button (for push-button connectivity with a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi router) and LEDs for connectivity, power, and wireless status.
The media bridge wirelessly pairs with the EA6500, allowing you to take advantage of the wired 802.11ac throughput speeds within your local network with devices connected directly to the Ethernet ports of the bridge. The device ships with a CD containing documentation, a quick install guide, a cat 5e cable and a power adapter.

It's a 5 GHz bridge with three internal antennas that deliver a 3x3 transmit /receive speed. The WUMC710 supports the pre-draft 802.11ac standard and wireless 802.11A and N. Since it's 5GHz, it won't work with single-band 2.4 GHz routers, which is OK, because the wireless connectivity if for connecting the bridge to the 5GHz-supported EA6500 router, not for connecting wireless clients. You can still connect wireless clients to the EA6500's 2.4 GHz band.

Setup
To set up and pair the Linksys bridge with the Linksys EA6500 router, it's best to initially place the media bridge near the router, (it can be moved later?Linksys recommends the device operates about five meters from the router).

Then, connect the power adapter and wait for the power LED to stop flashing?this took about 30 seconds in my testing.

Next, press the WPS button on the media connector and within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on the EA6500 router. When I did this in testing, the WPS button started to flash on the bridge and the illuminated Cisco logo on the EA6500 began slowly blinking?these flashing lights indicated that WPS pairing had commenced. After a few seconds the bride's WPS and wireless LEDs became a solid blue color?the pairing of the router and bridge had been made.

Testing
For testing, I connected a server to the bridge. I checked the server's network settings and was pleased to discover the server was part of the Linksys' EA6500 router's network via its Ethernet connection to the WUMC710.? I also checked the EA6500's Connected Devices list in the router's interface and saw the name of the server. My server also received Internet access through the bridge's connection.

One small issue to consider: If you make any wireless settings changes to the EA6500 router, you will have to pair the bridge and router again. I changed the network settings on the EA6500 by renaming the SSID for the 5GHz band. My server immediately lost connectivity on the network. The fix was easy enough: I just re-pressed the WPS button on the media bridge and then the router, which fixed the problem bringing my server was back online.

To test performance, I connected a Synology DS712+
NAS to a LAN port on both the router and then the bridge. I then wirelessly uploaded a 1.5GB file to the NAS from a laptop. Connected to the bridge via Ethernet, my NAS showed negligible upload speed difference as compared with the NAS only connected to the router. Both upload times were about 2 minutes uploading from a laptop to the NAS, with the bridged connection a little faster at 1 minute and 42 seconds. I expected faster speeds with the bridge connection, since it uses 802.11ac.

You may not see any performance gains with the bridge, even running both bridge and router in pre-draft 802.11ac mode. Still, the WUMC710 is very easy to set up and does a good job of to extending network connectivity to devices that wouldn't otherwise have it. The Linksys WUMC710 Wireless-AC Wi-Fi 5GHz Universal Media Connector Bridge with 4-Port Switch earns 3.5 out of 5 stars for networking hardware.

Full Moon Could Make Hurricane Sandy's Impact Worse

Heaven and Earth may be aligning to turn Hurricane Sandy into a real monster, just in time for Halloween.

Forecasters expect Sandy to make landfall along the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States on Monday or Tuesday (Oct. 29 or 30). It may merge with a separate tempest hitting the region at about that time, creating an immensely powerful "Frankenstorm" whose effects could be magnified by the full moon.

When the moon waxes to its full phase Monday afternoon, high tides along the Eastern Seaboard will rise about 20 percent higher than normal, even without the help of Sandy's storm surge, said Joe Rao, a meteorologist for News 12 in Westchester, N.Y. (Storm surges occur when a hurricane's winds push the water surface above normal levels.)

"Add a big storm, and the full moon will only serve to exacerbate the situation by helping to accentuate?the higher-than-normal water levels, possibly leading to moderate or major coastal flooding and beach erosion," Rao told OurAmazingPlanet via email.

A gravitational lag usually causes the highest tides to come a day or two after every full moon, he added.

"So?the?worst coastal flooding wrought by Sandy might actually come on Tuesday, all depending on exactly where and when the storm makes landfall," said Rao, who is also the Night Sky Columnist for OurAmazingPlanet sister site SPACE.com. [How to Prepare for Hurricane Sandy]

At full moon, the Earth, sun and moon are arranged in a line, with Earth in the middle. Tidal ranges are especially high at this time because the gravitational tugs of the sun and moon on our planet reinforce each other. The same effect is felt at new moon, when the three bodies all line up, with the moon between Earth and the sun.

Indeed, tides at the new and full moons are called "spring tides." The term has nothing to do with the season; it comes from the German verb "springen," which means "to spring up," Rao said.

Full and new moons have magnified storm impacts in the past, such as during the devastating "Ash Wednesday" tempest that rocked the U.S. East Coast in March 1962. The moon was full when this storm hit, but it was also at perigee ? the point in its orbit when it comes closest to Earth ? making things even worse.

A close lunar approach is one thing folks in Sandy's path don't have to worry about ? small comfort, perhaps, but it's something.

"If there is any saving grace in this upcoming situation regarding Sandy, it is that Monday's full moon comes less than three days before it arrives at apogee (farthest from the Earth)," Rao said.

Apple publishes 'Samsung did not copy' statement through gritted teeth

Whatever you think of the continual legal tussles between Apple and Samsung, a UK court's decision to force the former into publicly acknowledging that the latter did not copy its design will have seemed a little egregious even to the most ardent sammy-sympathiser. Well, that post is now live -- on Apple's site at least -- and as you might expect, is studiously manicured to almost not feel like an acknowledgement at all. The opening legalese notes that Samsung did not infringe "registered design No. 0000181607-0001," before going on to point out in perfect lay-terms the positive comments Judge Colin Birss made about its own slates. While Apple does confirm that the UK decision was further upheld by the court of appeal, it is also keen to remind you that other European legal jurisdictions (namely Germany) don't share this opinion. Head to source to read the statement in full.

Death toll tops 100 in Myanmar ethnic strife

SITTWE, Myanmar (AP) ? The death toll from recent ethnic violence in Myanmar's western state of Rakhine has surpassed 100, an official said Friday, as the government warned that the strife risks harming the country's reputation as it seeks to install democratic rule.

Rakhine state spokesman Win Myaing said 112 people had been killed in six townships in clashes that began Sunday between members of the Buddhist Rakhine and the Muslim Rohingya communities. He said 72 people were reported injured, including 10 children.

The government announced earlier that almost 2,000 homes had been burned down in the conflict.

In June, ethnic violence in the state left at least 90 people dead and destroyed more than 3,000 homes. About 75,000 have been living in refugee camps ever since.

A resident of another township, Ramree, said there also was violence there Friday morning.

"There were some clashes between the two sides in Ramree this morning," Kyaw Win, 30, said by phone.

"Residents are very fearful of imminent attacks by the Muslim community because security presence is very little. We don't feel safe. We want the Bengalis to be moved away from the Rakhine community," Kyaw Win said. Rakhine prefer to use the term Bengali for Rohingya, whom they contend are not a distinct ethnic group.

Kyaw Win said that a few houses had been burned down but that no casualties were reported.

The mob violence has seen entire villages torched and has drawn calls worldwide for government intervention.

"As the international community is closely watching Myanmar's democratic transition, such unrest could tarnish the image of the country," said a statement from the office of President Thein Sein published Friday in the state-run Myanma Ahlin newspaper.

Thein Sein took office as an elected president last year, and has instituted economic and political liberalization after almost half a century of repressive military rule.

"The army, police and authorities in cooperation with local people will try to restore peace and stability and will take legal action against any individual or organization that is trying to instigate the unrest," the statement warned.

The long-brewing conflict is rooted in a dispute over the Muslim residents' origin. Although many Rohingya have lived in Myanmar for generations, they are widely denigrated as intruders who came from neighboring Bangladesh to steal scarce land.

The U.N. estimates their population in Myanmar at 800,000. But the government does not count them as one of the country's 135 ethnic groups, and so ? like neighboring Bangladesh ? denies them citizenship. Human rights groups say racism also plays a role: Many Rohingya, who speak a Bengali dialect and resemble Muslim Bangladeshis, have darker skin and are heavily discriminated against.

A statement issued late Thursday by the office of U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon described the latest violence as "deeply troubling." Ban called on Myanmar authorities "to take urgent and effective action to bring under control all cases of lawlessness."

"The vigilante attacks, targeted threats and extremist rhetoric must be stopped," Ban said. "If this is not done, the fabric of social order could be irreparably damaged and the reform and opening up process being currently pursued by the government is likely to be jeopardized."

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the U.S. was deeply concerned about the reports and urged restraint.

In a hospital in Sittwe, the state capital not yet hit by the latest round of violence, an Associated Press photographer talked to four wounded people brought in from the affected areas. Aung Moe Khaing, 25, was wounded in an arm and a leg, saying he was shot Tuesday when soldiers dispersed the crowd.

Phyu Thein Maung, 39, from Yathetaung township, said he was shot in the buttocks.

"Muslims provoked us from inside their village and challenged us from their community, guarded by soldiers," he said. "People were very angry as they shot iron spikes at us with catapults and made abusive gestures. I was hit by a gunshot when soldiers dispersed the crowd."

There have been concerns in the past that soldiers were failing to protect the Rohingya community, but accounts this time from Rakhine villagers suggest that Myanmar's military may have been defending the Rohingya.

The crisis has proven a major challenge to Thein Sein's government and to opposition leader and Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been criticized by some outsiders as failing to speak out strongly against what they see as repression of the Rohingya.

The U.N. warned Thursday that the crisis had sent a new wave of refugees to seek shelter in camps already overcrowded with 75,000 people from the June violence.

Bangladesh has put its border guards on alert, fearing a new influx of Rohingya refugees.

On Thursday, Bangladesh border guards turned away 45 Rohingya trying to enter into Bangladesh by boats, said Lt. Col. Khalequzzaman, a border commander. Local police chief Selim Mohammad Jahangir said Friday that at least another 3,000 Rohingya Muslims had been spotted on about 40 boats on the Naaf River off Bangladesh's Tekhnaf coast.

He said the boats may try to enter Bangladesh, but "we have instructions not to let them come here."

Bangladesh says it's too poor to accept more refugees and feed them. Bangladesh is hosting about 30,000 Rohingya who fled Myanmar to escape government atrocities in 1991.

Pocket brings its 'read it later' service to Mac App Store, keeps its free status

We know Pocket has had a strong presence on iOS, Android and other platforms for quite some time now, but today the service formerly known as Read it Later announced it is now making its way to a bigger Cupertino screen. Naturally, Pocket's new application isn't much different than its mobile versions, meaning it'll offer the same offline access, save-for-later features as it currently does on the mobile front but with a more "native Mac experience" -- of course, this includes the ability to sync across multiple devices, stream videos and share tidbits via those cherished social networks. What's more, Pocket won't be charging a dime for its novel and handy OS X app, though this shouldn't come as a surprise given the outfit's somewhat recently adopted no-cost model -- still, it's a gesture most people will certainly appreciate, and one you Mac folk can start enjoying now by downloading from to the desktop-based App Store.

denver broncos Candy Crowley binders of women Alexis Wright presidential debates seahawks gawker

Former car dealer jailed for thefts ? Local News ? SalemNews.com ...

DANVERS ? A Swampscott man will spend the next 21/2 years in jail after admitting yesterday to swindling customers of his Danvers auto sales business out of their cars and cash.

Daniel Wright, 46, pleaded guilty during a hearing in Salem Superior Court to four counts of larceny and four forgery and forgery-related charges. Prosecutors were seeking to send him to state prison for four to six years.

Instead, when Wright is released from jail, in as little as 15 months, he?ll have a $53,000 restitution bill and a potential for up to 40 years in prison if he doesn?t pay up.

Wright and his lawyer say he was simply trying to save his business, Sterling Motor Cars, on a stretch of Route 114 filled with other auto dealerships.

?He was robbing Peter to pay Paul,? prosecutor Michael Patten told Judge Howard Whitehead during the sentencing hearing. ?It?s not a justification. It?s still a crime to rob Peter.?

?These were bona fide consumers,? Patten said. ?They did not expect to be put in the position they found themselves in.?

And for those customers, that position was awful: a young widowed mother trying to finance an SUV by selling her late husband?s Mercedes; another young woman who bought a Jeep only to have the police show up and return it to its owner, who hadn?t been paid for it; and another woman who was persuaded by Wright to take out a $15,749 car loan from a credit union, only to find out that the car she was buying was not available and that Wright had all the money.

?I trusted Dan at my most vulnerable time,? said Stacey Chicoine, a Melrose woman who had just lost her husband, Joey, 42, to brain cancer and was trying to care for a set of 9-month-old twins.

There was no life insurance, Chicoine told the judge, but her late husband had always pointed to the Mercedes S600 and told her to sell that.

So she went to Wright in May 2010.

?He knew I was a widow, and he took advantage of me anyway,? she said in a victim-impact statement.

Chicoine was going to use the proceeds from the sale of the luxury car to buy a Lexus SUV that Wright also had on the lot. Wright convinced her that she should take out a car loan, which she could repay once the Mercedes was sold.

Then, Patten said, Wright sold the Mercedes for $61,000. He never told Chicoine. Instead, he forged her late husband?s signature on the title and pocketed the money.

An Ipswich woman who spotted a Jeep Wrangler on Wright?s lot took out a loan for $23,149, then drove the car off the lot, only to find out a month later that legally, she did not own it.

Once again, Wright had pocketed the money and never paid the original owner of the Jeep, who eventually got the police involved to get his car back.

Wright eventually confessed to the scheme.

His lawyer, Robert Sheketoff, urged Whitehead to impose no more than six months in jail for his client, a sentence that would have made him eligible for parole almost immediately since he?d been held in custody at one point while awaiting trial.

?So, he was robbing Peter to pay Paul,? Sheketoff said. ?It?s not a defense. It?s an explanation. He was trying to save a business that was falling apart.?

Sheketoff blamed the economic downturn for Wright?s difficulties.

?This is a tragedy for everybody involved,? Sheketoff said.

Wright also asked to speak. He told Whitehead, ?I made a terrible choice. I carry that remorse in my heart every day. I know today these are empty words to Stacey, but I hope someday I can prove that they?re not.?

But Chicoine, who has waited 21/2 years to see Wright held accountable, wasn?t convinced that Wright is sorry.

And at this point, she?s doubtful she?ll ever see any of the money she?s owed.

The case had been delayed by a series of events, including three different attorneys representing Wright, who also delayed the process by agreeing to and then backing out of several earlier plea hearings.

Solving stem cell mysteries

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2012) ? The ability of embryonic stem cells to differentiate into different types of cells with different functions is regulated and maintained by a complex series of chemical interactions, which are not well understood. Learning more about this process could prove useful for stem cell-based therapies down the road. New research from a team led by Carnegie's Yixian Zheng zeroes in on the process by which stem cells maintain their proper undifferentiated state.

Their results are published in Cell October 26.

Embryonic stem cells go through a process called self-renewal, wherein they undergo multiple cycles of division while not differentiating into any other type of cells. This process is dependent on three protein networks, which guide both self-renewal and eventual differentiation. But the integration of these three networks has remained a mystery.

Using a combination of genetic, protein-oriented and physiological approaches involving mouse embryonic stem cells, the team -- which also included current and former Carnegie scientists Junling Jia, Xiaobin Zheng, Junqi Zhang, Anying Zhang, and Hao Jiang -- uncovered a mechanism that integrates all three networks involved in embryonic stem cell self-renewal and provide a critical missing link to understanding this process.

The key is a protein called Utf1. It serves three important roles. First, it balances between activating and deactivating the necessary genes to direct the cell toward differentiation. At the same time, it acts on messenger RNA that is the transcription product of the genes when they're activated by tagging it for degradation, rather than allowing it to continue to serve its cellular function. Lastly, it blocks a genetic feedback loop that normally inhibits cellular proliferation, allowing it to occur in the rapid nature characteristic of embryonic stem cells.

"We are slowly but surely growing to understand the physiology of embryonic stem cells," Zheng said. "It is crucial that we continue to carrying out basic research on how these cells function." Non-Carnegie co-authors on the paper include Gangquing Hu, Kairong Cui, Chengyu Liu and Keji Zhao of the National Institutes of Health; and John Yates III and Bingwen Lu of the Scripps Research Institute, the latter of whom is now at Pfizer.

Oddball Stocks: Certainty in investing

I will occasionally get an email from a reader saying they love my blog, then proceed to tell me about some great stock that's selling at 2x book, that's a "good earner", and has great potential. ?I sometimes wonder how much these people have actually read what I write about. ?I haven't received any emails like that recently, but I've been thinking about the role certainty plays in investment decisions.

I prefer certainty over uncertainty when making analyzing an investment. ?It's such a simple thing to say, I doubt any readers would disagree, but the investment style exhibited by most market participants disagrees with this statement. When more certainty exists assumptions are minimized and minimizing assumptions leads to less errors. ?I believe this is the reason I enjoy investing in net-nets, and companies on an asset basis. ?On a balance sheet, cash is cash, no assumptions are presumed, the book value of cash and market value of cash are one in the same. ?At the opposite end of the spectrum future earnings are at best a guess, maybe they fit a trend, but the truth is no one knows the future and what it holds. ?For everyone projecting earnings five and ten years out I want to see your earnings models from 2006, and 2007, were they accurate?

For an asset based investment uncertainty starts to creep in the further we move down the balance sheet. ?This is why when looking at net-net's Graham added a discount factor for receivables, and inventory, and finally property plant and equipment. ?The uncertainty is the highest with fixed assets, so the discount is the greatest.

The same is true with earnings, there is little uncertainty (usually) with revenue, but by the time we get to earnings all sorts of assumptions are incorporated adding an uncertain factor. ?This is also a reason that cash flow is preferable to earnings, cash is more certain and less prone to manipulation.

When I profile a cashbox, I get a lot of negative comments. ?A cash box is a company where the cash is a significant component of the market cap, and in some cases exceeds it. ?Usually the value of the actual business is small. ?Most of the comments I receive discuss how terrible the business is, and question why I'd want to invest in something so bad. ?I view it differently, a cash box minimizes uncertainty. ?When I buy a cash box I know for certain what I'm buying, maybe it's a $1 for $.75, or even $1 for $.50. ?The only uncertain thing is what the business might do, but my investment is protected against failure, because I purchased the certain thing cheap.

If I could buy a good company selling at a cheap price with the same amount of certainty as a cash box I would prefer the better company. ?The problem is these situations don't exist. ?There are no blue chip companies selling for NCAV, or a deeply discounted book value. ?Even the cheapest blue chips have a high uncertainty factor. ?Will earnings continue to be stable? ?What if margins shrink? ?What if demand for the product drops? ?What if the internet changes the business model? ?I do own some large caps, two actually, with high degrees of certainty. ?Both of my large cap holdings have virtual monopolies, or duopolies in their respective market, the certainty level is high.

There is a trade-off though, a company with certainty's returns are usually limited. ?A cashbox is never going to return 400%. ?A net-net isn't going to become the next Apple, at most they might return 50-100%. ?Occasionally a cheap certain stock will triple or quadruple, and very rarely more. ?The opposite is true for uncertain stocks, Apple fell to the $70s when it was announced Steve Jobs had cancer. ?That was the ultimate uncertainty, the market felt the company's future was cloudy, uncertainty was at a high, and the stock sold cheap. ?Uncertainty lifted and the stock has almost gone up 10x since then.

I believe Graham tried to encapsulate this idea in his discussion of investment return, and speculative return. ?An investment return is a certain thing, whereas a speculative return isn't certain, but it could be substantial.

I believe certainty is inversely correlated with a margin of safety. ?If a cash box is liquidating dollars for $.95 I don't need a margin of safety, my return, and the value of the assets are almost guaranteed. ?If I need to predict what car sales will look like in five years for an investment to work, I need to buy at a bigger discount to incorporate the chance that my prediction is wrong.

Sometimes investors fool themselves with the margin of safety concept. ?I will read writeups on Seeking Alpha that go something like this: earnings will grow from $.95 to $3.25 in 10 years, and discounted back at 15% (to be conservative) means the stock is worth $85, but it's only selling or $65, so I have a strong margin of safety. Note to all math nerds, I have no clue if the numbers work, I just made them, and the discount rate up.

When I read something like that I don't see anything safe, unless the company has a contract for ten years of earnings, growth is a gamble. ?And just because the current price is sitting below something a formula spit out doesn't make it "safe" even if there's a large discrepancy. ?I don't mind buying companies for their earning power, but I like to do it in what I consider a more certain way. ?As an example, a company has consistently earned $3-5 per share for years, even in down markets, and is selling for $15, would be considered "safe" to me. ?It would be even safer if book value was $13 per share, something close to the current price.

In summary, I want to look for investments where assumptions I need to make are minimized, and my downside is certain. ?I much prefer an investment where the absolute maximum loss is small to non-existant verses one where I have the potential to make 30x my money, or lose it all. ?I'm not a 20 punch Warren Buffett investor, but I have found it's worthwhile to be patient and wait for the right types of investments. ?And to anyone who thinks cheap companies aren't out there right now, there are over 60,000 public companies worldwide, some proportion of those are certain, and cheap. ?In Japan alone there are over 300 companies selling for less than cash. ?It always pays to be patient!

AT&T and IBM Create Breakthrough Global Cloud Service for ...

AT&T* (NYSE:T) and IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced a business agreement to deliver a highly secure, first-of-its-kind ?network-enabled? cloud service that uses private networks rather than the public Internet.

The companies are combining AT&T virtual private networking and IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+ cloud capabilities with breakthrough technology from AT&T Labs to create a new, fast and highly-secure shared cloud service. Targeted to Fortune 1000 companies globally, the service will be offered in early 2013 as a powerful new option for clients who are deploying cloud solutions that demand high levels of security and availability. Many businesses often cite security as a key inhibitor to cloud computing adoption.

When customers of the new service connect to IBM cloud computing resources across AT&T?s virtual private network, the innovative technology tightly integrates the security protections of both, allowing customers to quickly and reliably shift information or applications between their own data centers (private clouds) and this new cloud service. This is critical for businesses that want the flexibility of the cloud but also need to protect applications and data as they move between data centers and wired or wireless computing devices such as tablets, smartphones, personal computers, retail kiosks or other machine-to-machine devices.

For example, a financial services company using the new service could move and manage critical customer data between its and IBM's cloud data centers without the data ever leaving the security protections of the virtual private network.

AT&T?s breakthrough technology dynamically allocates networking resources to computing resources, automating functions that are often performed manually. This allows the network and compute resources to rapidly scale or contract in tandem to support the fluctuating demand on systems that an online retailer might experience before, during and after the holiday buying season; or that a large employer might experience before, during, and after their annual employee health benefits enrollment period.

?AT&T and IBM are delivering a new, network-enabled cloud service that marries the security and speed of AT&T?s global network with the control and management capabilities of IBM?s enterprise cloud,? said Andy Geisse, CEO of AT&T Business Solutions. ?This new service gives companies yet another way to innovate, create new value, and transform their businesses and industries.??

A key element of the cloud service is IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+, an IBM Infrastructure-as-a-Service optimized for mission-critical, enterprise workloads. As a managed and hosted cloud environment, it offers many advantages of a private cloud ? such as choice of dedicated physical servers and storage ? but also adds the scalable flexibility of a public cloud. Customers using the new service will have access to IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+? s broad spectrum of secure managed services and be able to run processes in both public and private cloud models.

?As more organizations realize that cloud can be secure, easily managed, and a key part of their business strategy, cloud will quickly evolve as a tool for innovation rather than just for infrastructure,? said Erich Clementi, senior vice president, IBM Global Technology Services. ?We believe this new service from two recognized leaders in cloud computing provides a compelling way for large organizations to exploit cloud?s transformational power.?

Other features of the new cloud service include:?

  • A variety of customization options to meet specific customer needs;
  • Committed service-level agreements (SLAs) aligned to business and usage requirements to increase accountability for response time and availability;
  • More than 70 automated built-in security functions; and
  • High levels of security extended to wired and wireless devices authenticated to the customer?s virtual private network.

All of the Fortune 1000 companies are currently customers of AT&T.

Financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.

How cancer cells break free from tumors: Study identifies adhesion molecules key to cancer?s spread through the body

ScienceDaily (Oct. 9, 2012) ? Although tumor metastasis causes about 90 percent of cancer deaths, the exact mechanism that allows cancer cells to spread from one part of the body to another is not well understood. One key question is how tumor cells detach from the structural elements that normally hold tissues in place, then reattach themselves in a new site.

A new study from MIT cancer researchers reveals some of the cellular adhesion molecules that are critical to this process. The findings, published Oct. 9 in Nature Communications, offer potential new cancer drug targets, says Sangeeta Bhatia, the John and Dorothy Wilson Professor of Health Sciences and Technology and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and leader of the research team.

"As cancer cells become more metastatic, there can be a loss of adhesion to normal tissue structures. Then, as they become more aggressive, they gain the ability to stick to, and grow on, molecules that are not normally found in healthy tissues but are found in sites of tumor metastases," says Bhatia, who is also a member of the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT. "If we can prevent them from growing at these new sites, we may be able to interfere with metastatic disease."

Lead author of the paper is Nathan Reticker-Flynn, a PhD student in Bhatia's lab. Other authors are former students David Braga Malta and Mary Xu, postdocs Monte Winslow and John Lamar, and research scientist Gregory Underhill. In addition, Richard Hynes, the D.K. Ludwig Professor of Biology and a member of the Koch Institute, and Tyler Jacks, director of the Koch Institute, are contributing authors on this study.

Losing and gaining adhesion

Cells inside the human body are usually tethered to a structural support system known as the extracellular matrix, which also helps regulate cellular behavior. Proteins called integrins, located on cell surfaces, form the anchors that hold the cells in place. When cancer cells metastasize, these anchors let go.

In this study, the researchers compared the adhesion properties of four types of cancer cells, taken from mice genetically engineered to develop lung cancer: primary lung tumors that later metastasized, primary lung tumors that did not metastasize, metastatic tumors that migrated from the lungs to nearby lymph nodes, and metastatic tumors that travelled to more distant locations such as the liver.

Building on a system they first described in 2005, the scientists developed technology allowing them to expose each type of cell to about 800 different pairs of molecules found in the extracellular matrix. After depositing cells onto a microscope slide in tiny spots -- each containing two different extracellular matrix proteins -- the researchers could measure how well cells from each tumor type bound to the protein pairs.

The new technology is a huge step forward from current experimental methods for studying cellular adhesion, which are limited to much smaller numbers of cells and adhesion molecules, says Jan Pilch, an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

"They've not only scaled this up dramatically, they're able to study the adhesion proteins in combination, which allows them to identify adhesion synergies," says Pilch, who was not part of the research team.

The researchers were surprised to find that adhesion tendencies of metastatic cells from different primary tumors were much more similar to each other than to those of the primary tumor from which they originally came. One pair of extracellular matrix molecules that metastatic tumors stuck to especially well was fibronectin and galectin-3, both made of proteins that contain or bind to sugars.

Although metastatic tumor cells share adhesion traits, they may take different pathways to get there, Reticker-Flynn says. Some tumor cells alter the combination of integrins that they express, while others vary the types of sugars found on their surfaces. All of these changes can result in higher or lower affinities for certain molecules found in the extracellular matrix of different tissues.

In an analysis of human tumor samples, both primary and metastatic, the researchers saw similar patterns. Specifically, they found that the more aggressive the metastasis, the more galectin-3 was present.

Previous studies have suggested that tumors pave the way for metastasis by secreting molecules that promote the development of environments hospitable to new cancer growth. Accumulation of galectin-3 and other molecules that help tumor cells colonize new sites may be part of this process, the researchers say.

"There's a lot of evidence to suggest that a hospitable niche for the tumor cells is being established prior to the cells even arriving and establishing a home there," Reticker-Flynn says.

Preventing cancer spread

The findings offer potential new ways to block metastasis by focusing on a specific protein-protein or protein-sugar interaction, rather than a particular gene mutation, Reticker-Flynn says. "If those changes do confer a lot of metastatic potential, we can start thinking about how you target that interaction specifically," he says.

The researchers tested this approach by genetically knocking down the amount of an integrin found on the surface of cancer cells, which they had identified as interacting with fibronectin and galectin-3. In those mice, tumor spread was reduced. Other possible therapeutic approaches include blocking binding sites on fibronectin and galectin-3 with antibodies, so tumor cells can't latch onto them.

To help with efforts to develop such drugs, the research team is now trying to figure out the details of tumor cells' interactions with galectin-3 and is developing new candidate therapeutics aimed at inhibiting those interactions.

The research was funded by Stand Up to Cancer, the Koch Institute Circulating Tumor Cell Project, the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, the National Cancer Institute, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Ludwig Center at MIT.

Ambir ImageScan Pro 930u

Small enough to fit on your desk as a personal scanner but heavy-duty enough to handle all the scanning in a small office or workgroup, the Ambir ImageScan Pro 930u ($695 direct) delivers lots of capability. Between its fast speed, duplex (two-sided) scanning, and 100-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF), it can turn thick stacks of pages into PDF files for document management or into text files for editing in a hurry. If you need a scanner for either or both applications, it can easily be a good fit.

The 930u is similar in some ways to the more expensive Kodak i2400 . Both focus on document management and optical character recognition (OCR), both include an option to send scans easily by email, and neither includes software for other applications, like business card recognition.

Both also include ultrasonic detection for double-feeds, so you won't accidently skip a page in a scanned file. In my tests, I had to tape two sheets together to force a double feed, but the 930u caught it, stopped the scan, and gave me a warning, telling me to remove the pages and feed them again. Beyond these similarities, of course, the 930u offers its own distinctive mix of software as well notably different performance.

Setup and Scanning
Setting up the 930u is standard for a desktop scanner. Snap in the paper input tray, connect the scanner by USB cable, and install the software. In addition to a scan utility, Ambir provides Newsoft Presto! PageManager 9.21 Standard for document management, Abbyy FineReader 9.0 Sprint for OCR, and both Twain and WIA drivers, which will let you scan directly from most Windows programs with a scan command, including FineReader and PageManager.

For my tests, I relied on the scan utility, which lets you define up to nine scan profiles, or presets. Each one lets you specify a color mode, resolution, the format to save the file in, and more. Once defined, you can pick any preset from a list on screen or from the scanner front panel. You can also go back to the definitions easily to modify them as needed.

Unfortunately, like too many scanners, the 930u lists the presets only by number, letting you pick the number 1 through 9 from a window on screen or scroll through the numbers on the one-character front-panel LED before hitting the front panel Scan button.

Starting a scan would be a lot easier if the scan definitions let you add a text reminder to each number in the list showing on screen. Even better would be to replace the one-character LED on the front panel with a multi-character LCD that could show the text reminder as well. As it is, unless you're much better at memorizing arbitrary number assignments than I am, you'll either need a cheat sheet near the scanner to tell you which number is for which kind of scan, or you'll need to do what I did, and open the definitions window to see which number you want before you give a scan command.

Performance and Other Issues
Ambir gives two different speed ratings for the 930u. For scanning in grayscale or black and white, the rating is 40 pages per minute (ppm) and 80 images per minute (ipm) (with one image on each side of the page) at 300 ppi (pixels per inch). For color, the rating is not only somewhat slower, at 30 ppm and 60 ipm, but it's tied to a lower resolution, at 200 ppi.

For our standard suite of scans for black and white text documents, I ran all the scans in grayscale mode (which is what Abbyy recommends for OCR) at 300 ppi, and came out with speeds that are close to the rating. Scanning in simplex mode to an image PDF file, the 930u managed 38.5 ppm. For duplex scans, it slowed down just a hair, to 37.5 ppm and 75 ipm.

These count as impressive speeds. As one point of reference, the Kodak i2400 came in at 28.3 ppm for simplex scans and 53.6 ipm for duplex. Even the significantly more expensive Editors' Choice Kodak i2600 was only a little faster than the 930u, at 41.7 ppm for simplex scans and 76.9 ipm for duplex.

As fast as the 930u is for scanning to image PDF format, it slows down far more than either Kodak model when you add text recognition to scan to a searchable PDF file instead. For our 25-sheet (50-image) test document, the 930u took 2 minutes 36 seconds to scan, recognize the text, and save the file. Both Kodak scanners were significantly faster, at 1:34 for the i2400 and 1:16 for the i2600.

Quite aside from speed, the 930u earned high marks for OCR accuracy, reading both our Times New Roman and Arial test pages at sizes as small as 6 points without a mistake.

One other feature worth mention, for those offices that need it, is that the 930u can scan embossed plastic cards, like credit cards or IDs. To scan a card, however, you first have to open the scanner, remove a pad module, and then close the scanner. Of course, you have to put the module back in when you're done. Removing and reinserting the module each time you scan is inconvenient at best, making this a potentially useful trick for occasional use, but not a terrific solution for scanning plastic cards repeatedly on a daily basis.

The Ambir ImageScan Pro 930u clearly offers a lot to recommend it. It's impressively fast in scanning to image PDF format and reasonably fast scanning to searchable PDF format. It also offers excellent OCR accuracy, a 100-sheet ADF to handle large documents easily, and ultrasound double-feed detection to guard against skipped pages. It's not a clear winner on all fronts, unfortunately, with slower times scanning to searchable PDF format than either the Kodak i2400 or i2600. However the Amber ImageScan Pro 930u is a capable performer overall, and it's a potentially attractive choice for heavy-duty document management and OCR in a small office.

IVT Launches ipad App

2nd Oct 12

IVT announces the launch of Lasso, a data collection app as a plugin for its products: Association Online and Nonprofit Online.

Lasso makes complex data collection across connected ?grass roots? organisations easy.

The Lasso App is available for:

  • iPad
  • Android Tablet
  • Desktop, Notebook or Laptop - with Windows operating system

Using Lasso in any of these systems is integrated, real time

Lasso was created in collaboration with the Local Community Services Association of New South Wales (LCSA - NSW). LCSA use Association Online by IVT as its association management system / website.

The need for Lasso was to respond to a review of the Community Builders funding program by the NSW Government (the program from which many LCSA members receive their main funding). The Government made the reporting of occasions of service a condition of funding, and the LCSA saw an opportunity to both deliver this requirement and to provide centres with a tool to collect data efficiently and consistently, allowing simplified analysis.

LCSA members login to the LCSA website to see results in preorganised reports, or download the entire data-set and upload into customised Excel sheets for detailed analysis.

Visit LCSA for more information. Lasso for iPad is available as a free download on the App Store and the Android version is available in Google Play, but you need to be an active member of LCSA NSW for it to work!

Chavez's socialist rule at risk as Venezuelans vote

CARACAS (Reuters) - Hugo Chavez loyalists blew bugles in a wake up call for voters on Sunday as the Venezuelan leader faced the biggest electoral challenge yet to his socialist rule from a young rival tapping into discontent over crime and cronyism.

Henrique Capriles, a centrist state governor, edged toward the still-popular Chavez in final polls thanks to a vigorous campaign that united the opposition and made him its best chance of ending the president's 14-year tenure.

Chavez has used record oil revenue to support ideological allies around the world while preaching a fiercely anti-American line, so the election is being watched eagerly from the United States to Belarus and Iran.

Queues formed at some polling centers long before they opened, and despite a few delays voting was going smoothly.

"The battle has started!" the flamboyant former soldier wrote in an early morning rallying cry on Twitter. "Today we will write another chapter in history."

Chavez loyalists in poor neighborhoods, where he draws his most fervent following, blew bugles and trumpets in the predawn wake-up call. In the center of Caracas, some red-clad fans shouted "Long live Chavez!" from the back of trucks.

Chavez, 58, staged a remarkable comeback from cancer this year. But he could not match the energy of past campaigns - or the pace set by his 40-year-old basketball-loving opponent.

"Today we decide the future of our Venezuela," Capriles said on Twitter. "Today we are millions of Davids! God will be our guide," he added, referring to his depiction of the vote as the biblical underdog's battle against Goliath.

Capriles had prepared for the election by hiking a mountain trail on the edge of Caracas on Saturday, donning sports gear and mirrored sunglasses and posing for pictures with supporters.

Opposition supporters had banged pots and pans in an overnight protest against the president in parts of the capital.

"Today I'm doing my bit to build a new Venezuela," said Francesca Pipoli, 26, walking to vote with two girlfriends in the city's wealthy Sebucan district. "Capriles for president!" all three sang in the street. "Henrique, marry me!" said one.

NO FORMAL MONITORS

Most well-known pollsters put Chavez in front. But two have Capriles just ahead, and his numbers have crept up in others.

There is a risk of violence if the result is contested. There are no formal international observers, but a delegation from the UNASUR group of South American nations, led by an Argentine politician, is in Venezuela to "accompany" the vote.

Local groups will be monitoring and both sides say they trust the electronic, fingerprint vote system. The opposition says it will have witnesses at all of the 13,810 polling centers, from tiny Amazon villages to tough Caracas slums.

In a politically polarized country where firearms are common and the murder rate is one of the highest in the world, tensions have risen alongside weeks of tough campaign rhetoric, and both camps are vowing to "defend" their votes.

Chavez accuses the opposition of plotting violence and planning to "reject the people's triumph" when he wins, but says that effort will be defeated. Some opposition activists fear he could refuse to step down if the result goes against him.

Victory for Capriles would remove the most vocal critic of the United States in Latin America, and could lead to new deals for oil companies in an OPEC nation that pumps about 3 million barrels a day and boasts the world's biggest crude reserves.

OBSTACLES TO ANY TRANSITION

Capriles wants to copy Brazil's model of respect for private enterprise with strong social welfare programs if he is elected - but he would face big challenges from day one. For a start, he would not take office until January 2013, meaning Chavez loyalists could throw obstacles in the way of the transition.

He would also have to develop a plan to tackle entrenched high inflation, price distortions and an over-valued currency, while surely butting heads with the National Assembly, judiciary and state oil company PDVSA - all dominated by "Chavistas."

Another big task would be to figure out the real level of state finances. Last month, a Reuters investigation found that half of public investment went into a secretive off-budget fund that is controlled by Chavez and has no oversight by Congress.

The president has denounced his foes as traitors and told voters they plan to cancel his signature social "missions," which range from subsidized food stores to programs that build houses and pay cash stipends to poor women with children.

Tens of thousands of new homes have been handed over this year, often to tearful Chavez supporters at televised events.

If Chavez wins, he can consolidate his control over Venezuela's economy and continue his support for leftist governments across Latin America, as well as allies farther afield such as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Syria's Bashar al-Assad, and Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus.

Any recurrence of Chavez's cancer would be a big blow to his plans, however, and could give the opposition another chance.

The election will also be watched closely in more than a dozen countries, including communist-led Cuba, that benefit from discounted Venezuelan oil sales under Chavez.

Investors who have made Venezuela's bonds some of the most widely traded emerging market debt are on tenterhooks.

"There is a perception that a tight electoral outcome may trigger social and political unrest and market volatility," Goldman Sachs said in a research note.

Voting runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. (1030-2230 GMT), although polls will stay open later if there are still queues. Results are due any time starting late on Sunday evening.

The electoral authority says it will only announce the results once there is an "irreversible trend" and parties are barred from declaring victory in advance of that announcement. (To follow us on Twitter: @ReutersVzla) (For multimedia coverage, go to http://reut.rs/QzUtvN)
