Update: Young Woman With Cancer - News Story - WCYB Tri Cities

It's a compelling story News 5 told you about back in October, a young mother with no health insurance finds out she has stage four brain cancer. Joy Lowe was rushed into surgery and in a coma for some time. We've been following Joy's recovery and Friday News 5 WCYB's Laura Halm had a first hand glimpse into the young mother's recovery.Good news can be something as small as a home video of Joy eating chocolate pudding. "She looks alert, she can look at me and she can hear me, and when I come in the room she'll smile," said Joy's husband Andy Lowe. Her smile is something Lowe doesn't take for granted. Since back in October the young mother was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer after doctors discovered a tumor. She had emergency surgery and was in a coma for some time. But, for friends the small improvements are simply encouraging. "Those first several days after surgery I went in and talked to her while she slept," said friend Jama Oliver.Lately Joy has been getting both speech and physical therapy. While Joy is getting better, she's still not 100 percent and there's still of course the cancer that has to be treated. "What I'm told by doctors it has some cells out there that you can't see a lot of the times which can reform," said Lowe. So, doctors told Lowe the next step is radiation and chemo therapy. Even though Joy now has Medicaid, it's the bills friends are still worrying about. "We're still in a process to keep him and the kids supported financially," said Oliver. While there have been small victories in the long road to recovery, Lowe tells News 5 he's trying to take each day at a time. "That's what makes the situation so hard, not knowing the future, how she's going to progress," he said.If you would like to follow Joy's recovery we've learned there's a Facebook page. You can even order a tee-shirt for 12 dollars and all the money goes directly to the family.
