For blacks and Latinos, few Calif. high schools offer path to college

Brian Gurrola/Flickr

California high schools that serve largely Latino or African American students are failing them as pathways to college, according to a new report by a statewide education policy, research and advocacy organization.

Just 10 percent of high schools that serve primarily Latino students have above-average graduation and college-going rates for Latinos. The same is true for African Americans at 24 percent of high schools serving the largest proportions of African American students, the Education Trust?West found. Many students in both populations are low-income.

The college-going rate among Latino and African American students who graduated high school in 2010 lagged behind that of white and Asian students by 20 and more than 30 percentage points, respectively. The estimate, released last week, found 45 percent of Latinos and 46 percent of African Americans in the class of 2010 enrolled in college.

Help us do more.

Researchers analyzed high school graduation rates for students who earned diplomas in 2010 and estimated their college-going rates using data from 2009, the first year such information was available. Their findings, they said, were disturbing.

"Far too few schools with large populations of African American, Latino and low-income students are serving as pipelines to post-secondary education," the report said. Post-secondary education includes both community colleges and four-year universities.

Among high schools with the highest proportions of African American students, 52 percent were considered either "broken pipelines," schools where African Americans graduate and go on to college at lower rates than statewide averages, or "not college bound," schools where African Americans had higher-than-average graduation rates but lower college-going rates.

Nine out of 10 Latino-dominant high schools were either broken pipelines or not college bound, researchers found.

Still, Orville Jackson, senior research analyst at the Education Trust?West, said he was pleased to find a number of schools serving as college pipelines.

There were "not as many as we'd like, but at least (there were) some schools where we could highlight where it's possible," he said. "They're kind of showing that it can be done ? that you can both graduate above average and send those kids on to college."

Imperial High School is among those identified as a college pipeline. The school, located less than 20 miles north of the Mexican border in Imperial County, has about 1,000 students, three-fourths of whom are Latino.

Ninety-two percent of Imperial High's Latino students graduated in 2010, according to the report. Among graduates, an estimated 78 percent went on to college.

Imperial High partners with its district's middle school, the local community college and San Diego State University to instill a "college-going culture," said Roger Ruvalcaba, the school's principal.

Although its graduation requirements do not mirror entrance requirements for the University of California and California State University systems ? something the Education Trust?West recommends for all high schools ? the school's counselors discuss both graduation and state university admissions requirements starting in eighth grade, Ruvalcaba said.

The school has also made efforts to make college preparation the default. In previous years, the school offered seniors an after-school opportunity to take a reading, writing and math exam?for placement at community colleges; about 75 to 80 students typically participated, Ruvalcaba said. This year, however, Imperial High integrated the test into the school day and had all its seniors participate.?

As a result, all seniors had test scores they could use at nearby Imperial Valley College ? where most of the school's graduates matriculate ? or other community colleges. Even for students who plan to attend four-year universities, Ruvalcaba said, the test shows them where they could place at a post-secondary level.

"You always have kids who say they're going to go away (to college) and then something happens," he said. "It's just another thing that helps them."

Orville would like to see more schools like Imperial High.

"If we increase the rigor and requirements at our high schools, that's going to be good for everyone," he said. "We need to have high expectations for all students."

PPTV Ranked No.1 by Daily User Traffic in China Online Video ...

Released on June 28th, 2012

BEIJING, June 28, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ ? According to the latest statistics released on June 3, 2012 by iResearch, the leading China internet research company, PPTV?s Daily Unique Visitors have reached 34 million, ranked No. 1 in the online video industry. With intense competition among China video players and low royalties for online video users, video companies are pursuing a strategy of content differentiation to stay ahead of the competition. PPTV has been building its differentiated content base on sports programming, exclusive Korean TV dramas and Taiwanese live TV shows for quite a while. Such a differentiated content strategy has helped the company retain its user base and support its growth amidst strong competition.

(Photo: http://www.prnasia.com/sa/2012/06/28/20120628122823561218.html )

iResearch released data based on the measurement of ?Comprehensive Video Services Ranking? that includes user traffic from both web and client software based video usage. The recent data shows that PPTV, Youku and PPS are ranked as the top three in the industry, all passing 30 million unique users in May 2012. Many believe that Euro 2012 has helped PPTV boost its traffic as PPTV is known for its live streaming technology and large sports content holdings. PPTV is one of only two video companies which acquired the Euro 2012 live streaming copyrights (Tencent video is the other). According to industry experts, PPTV has grown its traffic rapidly in the past six months, and is ranked No.1 in YTD growth, seen from the year-to-date traffic growth trend. After completing a $250 million financing deal with Softbank last year, PPTV invested in a exclusive content library including sports programming, Korean dramas and Taiwanese TV shows. These contents are generally not available on Chinese TV broadcasting stations. Content exclusivity and differentiation keeps PPTV ahead of the competition.

Although the top three companies are very close to each other in the overall ranking of Comprehensive Video Services, PPTV had outperformed most of its peers via its growth rate of 26.8%, followed by Tencent at 25.1%. The Euro 2012 programming has clearly provided a big boost to both of their traffic.

The measurement of ?Daily Unique Visitors? is considered as a key index for advertisement placement. Some experts have pointed out, with Youku and Tudou?s merger, that their expected synergy has yet to be seen as the integration process goes on. Suffering from recent lawsuits from Tencent and Sohu, PPS seems to have a shortage of copyrighted content in its content library. It is a fact that most video players can hardly differentiate themselves from each other from a content standpoint. On the other hand, PPTV has constantly invested in live sports programming, such as Euro 2012, English Premier League, NFL, UFC and domestic sports like the CBA, CSL, etc. In early 2011, PPTV signed deals with Korean and Taiwanese TV broadcasters, so PPTV now owns exclusive rights to most Korean TV dramas and Taiwanese TV shows. ?We have been pursuing our content differentiation strategy and have focused our investment on it. We understand that sports draw in male viewers, and Korean and Taiwanese TV shows are very appealing to female users,? said Vincent Tao, CEO of PPTV, adding, ?However, having great content does not guarantee traffic growth.? PPTV, once viewed as a client software based video player, has engineered and released their new video products across all devices, including their web viewing product and tablet and mobile phone based products for Android, iOS, Mac, Win 8, etc. The wide availability of its video experience has helped PPTV attract more video users. At the end of May 2012, PPTV ranked as the No.1 most downloaded iPad appstore video application.

The next question is whether PPTV is able to monetize their programming content effectively. In China, Sports media has gone through many tough times. PPTV has developed a so called SEM program, Sports Entertainment Marketing, to attract advertisers. According to a third party source, PPTV had bagged more than 30 advertising sponsors for its Euro Cup live programming at an estimated dollar amount of over 30M RMB. ?2012 is all about sports and monetization,? said Tao. With the Olympics coming, it could be a great year in terms of content differentiation among China?s major online video players.

This human ancestor ate like a chimp

A video from Johns Hopkins University explains how teeth were analyzed to determine the diet of a 2 million-year-old human ancestor known as Australopithecus sediba.

By Alan Boyle

Researchers used a clever trio of tricks to figure out what 2 million-year-old human ancestors ate by analyzing the stuff on their teeth, and they found something unexpected: They ate more like chimpanzees than like humans. Their analysis could point to a reason why our species triumphed while some of our long-lost cousins failed.

"Our results suggest that there was more variation among hominins around 2 million years ago, in terms of what they ate and where they lived," Amanda Henry of Germany's Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology explained in an email, using the technical term for humans and their close fossil relatives.

The various species spread out into different environments, ranging from forests to grasslands, but each species had a preferred environment, in part due to diet specialization. "Then, with the evolution of Homo erectus around 1.8 million years ago, we see a big shift," Henry said. "Homo erectus thrived in a whole variety of environments, and was even able to migrate out of Africa."

Homo erectus eventually gave rise to Homo sapiens ? that is, us. Meanwhile, the hominins that were tied down to Africa's forests?? perhaps including Australopithecus sediba, the South African species that Henry and her colleagues studied ? faded away in the competition with other apes. The latest research, published online today by the journal Nature, doesn't address that big evolutionary issue directly. But it does provide plenty of food for thought.

Decoding the diet
Australopithecus sediba was discovered in 2008, and has come to be seen as a transitional species between the relatively small, ape-like pre-humans known as australopiths and our closer ancient relatives in the genus Homo. Only a few specimens of the species have been recovered, but they appear to reflect chimp-like as well as human-like characteristics.

So which way did Au. sediba swing when it came to its diet? The researchers focused on the teeth of two specimens, a juvenile male and an adult female.

First, the researchers zapped the tooth enamel with a laser and analyzed the vapor that was given off. The composition of the enamel preserves a record of what the individual ate while it was growing up. In this case, Johns Hopkins University geochemist Benjamin Passey used a mass spectrometer to look at the balance of carbon-12 and carbon-13 isotopes in the vapor.

Lee Berger

The teeth of a juvenile male Australopithecus sediba had a dark layer of calculus, which is clearly visible in this close-up picture.

If the level of carbon-12 is relatively high, that suggests a diet heavy in forest products such as leaves, fruits and the critters that eat those things. Those are known as C3 foods. But if carbon-13 is high, that points to foods from the African savanna, such as seeds, roots and grasses. These are C4 foods.

"It seems like a hallmark of human evolution to be able to use savanna resources," Passey told me. "Today, most of our energy comes from grass in one way or another, either from grain or from animals that eat grain and grass."

Tests on sediments and various animal bones suggested that the area where the specimens were found was a savanna 2 million years ago. However, when Passey analyzed the samples from Au. sediba, he found that the carbon was almost pure C3, suggesting a diet heavy in forest products.

Two other lines of evidence confirmed that preference: Deposits of plaque on the teeth contained bits of silica, known as phytoliths, that were linked to forest vegetation. Also, the pits on the teeth were characteristic of creatures that favored a forest diet. All the evidence pointed to the conclusion that these particular pre-humans went to the forests for virtually all of their food, even though their remains were left behind in the savanna.

"This astonished us," Passey said.

The meaning of diet
Upon reflection, it shouldn't be that surprising that Australopithecus sediba passed up what the African savanna had to offer, said the University of Colorado's Matt Sponheimer, another co-author of the Nature paper. "We know living apes don't seem to like such foods much ??or at least they are never a large portion of their diets," he told me in an email. "It is likely that this is at least partly due to their masticatory (and probably digestive) anatomy being suboptimal for such diets."

Modern-day savanna chimpanzees engage in similar behavior, the researchers noted.

The findings are consistent with the view that "early hominins were quite flexible with respect to diet, with different populations preferring different parts of the available plant resource base, depending on when they lived, and where," said Bill Kimbel, who serves as director of Arizona State University's Institute of Human Origins but was not involved in the Nature study. "The plant phytoliths are a nice addition to the repertoire of perspectives on the issue."

In an email exchange, Kimbel cautioned against reading too much into Au. sediba's preference, as reflected by the results from two individuals. He took issue with my suggestion that the results put the species in the "chimp camp" rather than the "human camp," and noted that other hominin species had different preferences for C3 vs. C4 foods.

"I don't think sediba should be seen as 'remarkable' in this context," he told me. "And sediba no more belongs in the 'chimp camp' than it does in the 'giraffe camp' (with which it also shares dominant C3 values). This is not a useful analogy."

Sponheimer declined to say whether he thought Australopithecus sediba died out because it didn't shift its diet to the foods of the savanna, "but one could make such an argument if indeed this was an organism tied to very specific microhabitats by a limited dietary repertoire." A different argument could be made as well: Perhaps the descendants of Au. sediba eventually adapted to a diet that took in C4 as well as C3 foods, and thus contributed to the rise of early Homo.

Passey, for one, would love to study more specimens. "It would be nice to analyze those and see if all members of that species have that same forest behavior," he told me. However those future experiments turn out, the findings reported today show how novel techniques ? ranging from precision laser blasting to tooth-crud analysis ? can?shed light on the origin of our species. ??

More about human origins:

In addition to Henry, Sponheimer and Passey, the authors of "The Diet of Australopithecus Sediba" include Peter S. Ungar, Lloyd Rossouw, Marion Bamford, Paul Sandberg, Darryl J. de Ruiter and Lee Berger. The paper, published online today, will appear in a future print edition of Nature.

Google is showing us a demo of Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and one of the many improvements includes much improved voice search features. We all know how Apple has been promoting Siri to no end and this looks like a serious competitor.

The improved voice search includes functionality from their knowledge graph. For example, the presenter asked who the Prime Minister of Japan was, the phone brought up Wikipedia and read who the Prime Minister is. He asked for pictures of marmosets and it brought up pictures of the funny looking creature. Impressive stuff and we'll look to have a demo of it for you when we can.

NASA's Seven Minutes of Terror: Curiosity's precarious Mars landing explained (video)

NASA's Seven Minutes of Terror Curiosity's precarious Mars landing explained video

Edited and scored with dramatic tension of a summer blockbuster trailer, NASA's put together a gripping short clip that dresses down Curiosity's mission to Mars for the layman. The "car-sized" rover, set to touchdown on August 5th of this year at 10:31PM PDT, is currently journeying towards the Red Planet on a suicide mission of sorts, with the success of its make it or break it EDL (enter, descent, landing) wracking the nerves of our Space Agency's greatest minds in advance. Their cause for concern? A period of radio silence, dubbed the "seven minutes of terror" for the amount of time it takes a signal to reach Earth, during which the craft will have already either smashed disastrously into the Martian landscape or nestled perfectly down from the ascend phase on a 21ft long tether. The logistics involved are so numerous and prone to error -- slowing the craft from 13,000 mph to 0 mph and then deploying, detaching and avoiding collision with the supersonic parachute for starters -- that it's a wonder the government ever signed off on the project. If it all does come off without a hitch, however, the ladies and gents down at Pasadena's Jet Propulsion Laboratory certainly deserve several thousand bottles of the finest bubbly taxpayer's money can buy. Click on past the break to gape at the sequence of engineering feats required to make this landing on terra incognita.

Details emerge of first BlackBerry 10 devices: touchscreen L and QWERTY N-Series

Details emerge of first BlackBerry 10 devices touchscreen L and QWERTY N series

The launch of BlackBerry 10 and its debut devices is slowly creeping up on us, and some details about the handsets are finally starting to emerge. According to N4BB, RIM has two models up its sleeve -- the all touchscreen L-Series and the QWERTY keyboard-sporting N-Series. The L branded models will be very similar to the dev devices we've already seen, with a 1280 x 768 OLED display (a first for a BlackBerry) that crams an impressive 356 pixels into every inch. The N-Series is more for the BlackBerry purists who cling desperately to their physical keyboards. Originally leaked with the codename Nevada, the N-Series shrinks the display to 720 x 720, but still keeps the pixel density impressive at 330ppi. N4BB's sources say that the L will hit shelves first in September, with the N to follow in Q1 of 2013.

NATO to meet over Syria's downing of Turkish jet

NATO said it would meet to discuss member state Turkey's accusation that Syria shot down one of its warplanes in international airspace and not inside its own territory, as Damascus claims.

NATO said it would hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday following a request from Turkey that invoked Article Four of the alliance's founding treaty, which covers threats to member states' security.

Turkey has already acknowledged that its fighter jet might at some point have entered Syrian airspace. But after an initially cautious response, Ankara toughened its rhetoric on Sunday.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told Turkey's TRT television that at the time it was shot down, their plane was in international airspace, 13 nautical miles from Syria.

Syria had given no warning before opening fire, he added.

The fighter had been on an unarmed training mission to carry out a radar system test, and both pilots are still missing.

"The Syrians knew full well that it was a Turkish military plane and the nature of its mission," said Davutoglu.

"Nobody should dare put Turkey's (military) capabilities to the test," he warned.

"We will bring this affair before public opinion and international law in the name of Turkey's honour."

Syria has acknowledged shooting down the F-4 phantom jet after it violated its airspace, but insists it only identified it as a Turkish fighter after the fact.

"What happened was an accident and not an assault as some like to say," Syrian foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi told the Al-Watan pro-government daily on Sunday.

But UN Security Council member Britain warned that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime "should not make the mistake of believing that it can act with impunity."

"It will be held to account for its behaviour," Foreign Secretary William Hague said.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned a "brazen and unacceptable act" and promised US assistance in investigating the incident.

"It is yet another reflection of the Syrian authorities' callous disregard for international norms, human life, and peace and security," Clinton said in a statement.

Italy, another NATO member, also condemned Syria over the incident and Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi said they would "actively participate" in the NATO meeting.

In his comments to Al-Watan Sunday, foreign ministry spokesman Makdissi tried to pour oil on the troubled waters.

"Syria was merely exercising its right and sovereign duty and defence," he said.

"There is no enmity between Syria and Turkey, but political tension (exists) between the two countries."

Turkish-Syrian relations have been strained by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's outspoken condemnation of the Assad's regime's bloody crackdown, which activists say has killed more than 15,000 people since March 2011.

Already Saturday, UN chief Ban Ki-moon had expressed his "deep concern" about the incident, particularly about the "potential serious implications" for the region, spokesman Martin Nesirky said.

The fighting inside Syria claimed scores more lives on Sunday.

The official SANA news agency reported that regime troops had killed "dozens of terrorists" after engaging them as they attacked people in the Jabaliye neighbourhood of Deir Ezzor.

The Syrian government uses the term "terrorists" to describe the rebels.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 91 people had been killed on Sunday in Syria, including 59 civilians.

The Observatory also reported that following an attack on an artillery battalion in Aleppo, a number of soldiers had defected, taking with them a large quantity of weapons.

And it said that rebels had shot down a Syrian regime helicopter near the Jordanian border.

"This is one of the bloodiest weeks in the conflict," Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Observatory, said.

"It's like we are in a war. Sometimes when two countries are at war, not even 20 people are killed a day. But now in Syria it has become normal to have 100 killed each day."

Australia on Monday announced fresh sanctions against Syria, restricting or prohibiting trade across entire sectors.

"The Assad regime continues to show its unwillingness to negotiate a ceasefire and bring an end to Syria's bloodshed," Foreign Minister Bob Carr said in a statement.

In an opinion piece for The Australian newspaper, Carr called for Moscow to take a lead role in forcing Assad out.

But there were reports that Russia was to try again to send a Russian ship to make a controversial delivery of attack helicopters to Syria.

A first journey ended after exposure by the US authorities led the ship's British insurer to withdraw cover.

But an unnamed Russian diplomat said the ship, the Alaed, would soon try again to deliver the aircraft.

Biological switch paves way for improved biofuel production

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Scientists from Queen Mary, University of London have discovered a mechanism that controls the way that organisms breathe or photosynthesize, potentially paving the way for improved biofuel production.

Writing in the journal PNAS, Dr Lu-ning Lu and Professor Conrad Mullineaux from Queen Mary's School of Biological and Chemical Sciences report that by exposing cells to different light conditions, they have changed the way in which electrons are transported.

Professor Mullineaux explains: "Any organism that breathes or photosynthesizes depends on tiny electrical circuits operating within biological membranes. We are trying to find out what controls these circuits: what makes the electrons take the routes that they do, and what switches are available to send the electrons to other destinations?"

Cyanobacteria are a kind of bacterium that both breathes and photosynthesizes and therefore has a complicated set of different possible electron transport pathways.

The team put specific fluorescent tags on some of the protein components involved in electron transport, and then viewed the live cells with a fluorescence microscope to see where those complexes are in the cell.

By studying the cells in this way, the team visualized a biological electrical switch in action. When they changed the conditions (for example by making the light brighter or dimmer), the cell responded by changing the position of the complexes, which leads to major changes in the pathways of electron transport.

Full understanding of these mechanisms could help with re-engineering of cyanobacteria for improved solar-powered biofuel production, for example.

How to Avoid the Spam Filter in Your Email ... - Internet Marketing

**Note: This is a guest post written by one of our readers. For more information on how to submit a guest post, please read our?guest posting guidelines.

Email marketing is a great way to communicate with prospects as well as current and past clients. That being said, there is a lot that goes into sending a high quality, highly targeted email. Along with this, you have to concern yourself with spam filters. In other words, is your message going to make its way to the recipient? Or will a spam filter pick it off along the way?

Before you do anything, it is important to plan your email marketing campaign. With the proper strategy in place, you have a much better chance of avoiding the spam filter attached to your target?s email account.

Tip: once you have an email newsletter template that works, stick with it in the future. Not only will this ensure that you avoid the spam filter, but if it converts well you will know that you are going to get the results you are looking for.

Are you new to the email marketing game? If so, it is safe to say that you may not know much about spam filters and how these work. For this reason, you have the potential for making mistakes along the way ? many of which are sure to slow you down.

The bad thing about a spam filter is that you don?t get a second chance. Once your email ends up here, there is nothing you can do but sit back and wait for your next chance at the prospect.

5 Tips to Avoid Accidental Spam Filtering

No matter if you are new to email marketing or have been engaging in this method for many years, there are several things you can do to avoid accidental spam filtering:

  1. Do not use ?spammy? phrases. These include everything from ?deal of a lifetime? to ?click here? to ?once in a lifetime opportunity.? Spam filters can detect these phrases, especially if they are included in the subject of your email.
  2. Do not treat your email newsletter the same way you would a sales page. This means avoiding the overuse of exclamation points. While there is nothing wrong with emphasizing your content here and there, using more of these than necessary will improve the chance of your email ending up being marked as spam.
  3. All CAPS should be avoided at all costs. This is one of the most common subject line mistakes that people make, even those who have been using this marketing tactic for a long time. Why would you want to use all CAPS? This is the equivalent of screaming at your audience. This does not improve the click through rate of your email. If anything, it will scare people away as it appears to be extremely spammy.
  4. Using color for your fonts. If I add bright red to the beginning of my email people will think it is important, right? Think again. The more colors you use, the less likely somebody is to read through your email. And of course, this can set off the spam filter from a mile away.
  5. Messy HTML. When you attempt to cut corners by converting a Word file to HTML, it is safe to say that you are going to end up with a sloppy HTML email. In turn, it is going to be flagged as spam almost every time.

With these five tips in mind, you should find it much easier to avoid the spam filter with every email newsletter that you send. Once you know what you are doing in this regard, you will find that your read-rate is much higher ? and that is exactly what you want.

If your email is not read, the recipient cannot take action. And if he or she cannot take action, there is no point in sending the email in the first place.

When you start with a good plan and follow it up with the above tips, you can beat even the most strict email filters. Subsequently, you will find that your newsletter is converting better and allowing you to get in touch with a larger number of people on your list. Don?t let the use of spam filters stop you from achieving all your email marketing goals.
