Jiri Musil, one of CEU's founding fathers, dies | Central European ...

Jiri Musil, pre-eminent sociologist and longstanding contributor to the formation and the achievements of Central European University, died on Sept. 16, 2012, the age of 84.

Musil was Professor of Sociology at Charles University in Prague who served as the first Director of the reestablished Institute of Sociology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic from 1990 to 1992. Subsequently, he served as Academic Director of the Prague College of CEU while it existed from 1992 to 1995. He remained dedicated to CEU after the Prague campus closed, teaching generations of students in History and Sociology until his retirement in 2004. In 1999, Musil was elected President of the European Sociological Association. He was also a consultant to the United Nations, UNESCO, the International Federation for Housing and Planning, and other international professional associations. He wrote a number of widely acclaimed works (in Czech, English, and German), especially in the field of urban sociology. He also edited volumes on ?The End of Czechoslovakia? and ?The Meaning of Liberalism East and West? (both with CEU Press, 1995 and 1999, respectively).

Musil loved the cities of Central Europe, the subject of his expertise. One of the last true Czechoslovaks, he was an untiring supporter of the dream of Central Europe. In him, CEU mourns a founding father, a wonderful colleague, and an exceptional human being. His cheerful irony, sound scholarship, common generosity, and wise humanity will be hugely missed.
