Sea Cliff home perfect for family, entertaining | bay2biz.com ...

After moving to San Francisco from the East Coast, John Hollway and his family wanted a place with great living space and entertainment possibilities.

?With four children, we wanted to be together during the day and evening, with private spaces where everyone could comfortably be apart,? Hollway said.

They couldn?t find exactly what they were looking for, so with the help of Winder Gibson Architects, they created it.

The result?

A 1926 Mediterranean-style home in Sea Cliff expanded to 5,960 square feet. They also added two large decks that offer views of the ocean, the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin County. With six bedrooms and 5 1/2 baths, 520 El Camino Del Mar is listed for $7 million.

It?s a blend of old and new.

?We left the classic living room and dining room the way they were, with 10-foot ceilings, great moldings and floors,? he said. ?But we created a first-floor sunroom and redesigned the family room and kitchen, all of which open to a full deck.?

He said the family entertained a lot, with huge Christmas and Halloween parties.

?The floor plan is almost circular, with the dining room and living room flowing straight through to the kitchen,? he said.

Large doorways allow guests to enjoy the views from multiple rooms.

Hollway said the renovations, completed in 2006, were the first since the kitchen had been updated in the 1970s.

The new kitchen has custom cabinetry, a large center island with counter seating and a wet bar with a sink, ice maker and double refrigerator drawers. Appliances include a six-burner Wolf range with double ovens, a grill and pasta faucet, a large-capacity Viking refrigerator, three dishwashers and a wine cooler. There are two full sinks and a pantry with felt-lined shelves.

Prior to the changes, the home had no outdoor space.

One addition was a brick-front terrace, which, he said, was a perfect place for morning coffee.

?We also added wall-to-wall decks on the main living level and master bedroom,? he said.

The master suite has floor-to-ceiling windows. Four additional bedrooms are upstairs, along with a laundry closet and an office with built-in cabinetry. There?s an additional office on the main level.

The finished basement has an au pair suite, a full laundry, entertainment and game rooms.

Hollway said Sea Cliff is a special neighborhood, with great hiking and running.

?You?re in between the Presidio and Lands? End and a mile from Golden Gate Park,? he said.

It?s a five-minute drive to Marin County and a 15-minute drive to the Financial District, which Hollway called ?the most beautiful drive you?ll ever drive.?

?It?s very centrally located, yet we didn?t have to wrestle with off-street-parking issues,? he said.

The home has a two-car garage and a 40-by-30-foot pad that can be used for additional parking or as a basketball court. ?It?s a fabulous house, and we loved every minute in it,? he said.
